You should gradually take away everything he/she loves, except for your love of course. You can take away tv, all their toys, and everything off the walls, even the door. That works way better than spankings.
Make sure you really play up good behavior. Go out of your way to catch her/him being good. Make sure for every negative thing you say you say at least five things about what they do good. (this really works) For example: I just caught you putting on your shoes when I asked you too. This makes me feel really proud to have such a wonderful child. You do have to look for it at first.
You need to make sure your temper is always in check too. You can't be telling your kids not to yell back or hit, if you are yelling and spanking them. You can say all you want "do as I say not as I do" but that never work.
The key thing to remember is that your the parent, and you love this child who is disrespecting you. Its hard at the moment to think of lovely thoughts, so sometimes its better to wait a few minutes before enforcing the punishment. They will panic to see that you are calm. That is far more scary to them, because they see that your serious.

If you have never heard of a discipline program called 1 2 3 Magic I recommend you check it out, they cover pretty much everything and theres no physical discipline required.
I have 4 kids and my first 2 were 6 and 8 when we started using it (and were rather willful, I felt like I was spending most of my day standing over them to get them to do thier chores and not getting much else done) after using the program I was actually surprised at how well it worked (I admit I was VERY skeptical) we use it in conjunction with a computer program called "My Reward Board" so they can earn rewards for good behaviour as well (reinforce the good to help eliminate the bad) My oldest is now 10 and though he has ADHD we no longer have daily fights with him and he is no longer on medication.... my daughter (now 8) still has an "attitude" but its limited to her stomping off in a huff IF I get to 3 and she gets timed out and points removed from the board.
In the meantime while you are getting them used to a new disipline program.... when they start to hit or kick you pick them up (gently) facing away from you so that they cannot gain as much access to you to harm you and carry them directly to their room. Place them in their room and let them cool off there. When they are done having their fit then go in and say "If you are in a better mood now and wil not hit then you may come out." If they start to tewar apart their room during these sessions you may have to strip their room of everything but their bed and get used to remaking it. I had a friend whose child had major anger issues (mother and son had been abused by the father and this was during their recovery) it took them alot of time and persistance and it wasnt an easy road but they got through it and she uses the same discipline program as I do now (but she doesnt have the reward board... they just do chore charts). You might also look into getting the child into counseling for anger management, it will help if you are working in conjunction with a trained professional. Good Luck.

Well you could do it the politically correct child psycholgy way.. sit them down.. get down on there eye level.. sternly explain to them that that is unacceptable behavior.. and give the a time out on a quiet space and don't like them out until you receive and apology...
or you could do it the way thousand of kids were raised before the... whip their backs side and let them know there's more where that came from.. knock it off

Stripe away everything they hold near and dear, including all of the luxuries of life and everything in their room. Leave nothing but a mattress blanket and pillow. Make them earn every single solitary thing back by exhibiting "good" behavior.

Hit & kick them back & see how they like it? Mine never did but but you cannot tolerate this - EVER. You should tell them that the next time they do it you are going to give it right back to them & explain that people who love & respect each other do not behave in such a manner. If you are in a publc place explain to them how ugly that behavior looks to other people & point out how everyone is staring at them. I used to dig my fingernails into their arm & speak to my boys through gritted teeth in a low voice that way nobody could tell I was inflicting a little pain.

Take stuff away from them, my ***! I dont agree with hitting children, but that is clearly showing no respect for your parents and if you dont respect your own parents well then later on in life, we got a BIG PROBLEM.... I'd whip their little asses..... and then theyd be grounded, for a long time....

Set some FIRM ground rules and stick to them. Don't ever, ever hit them, even on their butts. That's child abuse. Also, when you speak to them have them look you in the eye. Let them know you love them, but mean business when it comes to disipline. Good Luck!
