As an atheist myself, at least I could respect the guy, and intellectually debate him (in my mind) on an equal level. This new pope is just a twit, isn't he? Why would anyone in that position "write off" an entire alternative faith as he has done? Pope Benedict has alienated Muslims without stopping to consider their are more of them than him. Why would anyone be so silly?

I'm impressed with the number of intelligent & thoughtful answers (except for Martin S.'s, who apparently sees no conflict in his claim of moral superiority as a non-Catholic "Christian" and simultaneous condemnation of devout Catholics, Muslims & Jews! What a piece of work. Ironic given that it was Catholic Romans that brought the Roman tanbur or cithara to Spain around AD400, and that's what developed into your current weapon of choice, the guitar! )

The old one was intelligent, but of course misguided in his beliefs. The new one's stance is disturbing at this time in our history, as if he wants to foment violence and war.

I respect John Paul. He was a great man. He helped the Jews by hiding them from the Nazis, but I'm not Catholic. I'm Baptist Christian. Pope Benedict I don't think he should of been elected as Pope. I use to be a Catholic, but I see that the Catholic church made Christianity into political religion, and I don't believe that's what Jesus attended it to be.

As a Christian I don't have much good to say about the Pope. If he is truly a man of Christ and God he should have said the truth about Islam as it is revealed in the Bible and let God be responsible for the consequences.
Islam is a false religion started by a false prophet who was "inspired" by the spirit of the anti-Christ and all who belong to it need to repent and turn to Jesus to be saved. The Pope should state that truth in love by saying that he is praying for all who belong to that religion to see the truth and be saved.
1 John 4:1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. 2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God: 3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
When Muslims say that they "honor" Jesus as a prophet of God but deny that He is God's Son who came down from Heaven to pay for our sins on a cross they make Jesus out to be a liar and nothing more than a man. That's the work of the spirit of the anti-Christ to paint Jesus as insufficient for salvation and to try to replace Him in men's hearts and minds with a substitute. The term anti-Christ doesn't specifically mean "against Christ" it means "insted of" Christ.
Any religious leader who makes a claim on the Christian faith who fails to speak this Biblical truth will have to answer to God for such a lapse and in the case of the non-Biblical office of "Pope" it may well be in judgment before being cast into the Lake of Fire.
James 3:1 My brothers, let not many become teachers, knowing that we shall receive greater judgment.
Revelation 21:8 But as for the cowardly, the faithless, the detestable, as for murderers, the sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars, their portion will be in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, which is the second death."

Let me see... women couldn't be ordained. Abortion was tantamount to murder, even in instances of rape or incest. Gays weren't entitled to the ordinary rights of other human beings.... no, I don't miss JP2 or any religious extremist.
