Based on my cursory knowledge, I would probably say La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Metropolitan Opera are the top three. Am I right?

I've already checked out Wikipedia's "List of important opera companies" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_important_opera_companies). It doesn't really help--I'm looking for something like a "Top Ten Opera Houses".

I think the bg 5 in the US are : Met, NYCO, Lyric Opera Chicago, San Franisco and Houston? LA is probably interchangeable in that group now as well as Washington Opera and Seattle as well. I think your top 3 are vertainly the most well known and they get huge stars... Still Sydney is pretty cool and you are completely forgetting the big houses in France and Germany and Austria as well... The Berlin Statsoper has to be towards the top of the pack!

Italy has many wonderful opera houses. The ton ten opera houses in Italy are: Teatro La Fenice, Teatro Alla Scala, Teatro San Carlo,
Teatro Massimo, Teatro Comunale di Bologna, Teatro Verdi, Teatro Regio di Parma - Teatro Verdi, Teatro Regio Torino, Teatro dell'opera di Roma, and
Arena di Verona.

I have found no top ten opera houses. But I am sure that those 3 would be in the top 10 or so.

It has to be the Scala in Milan and the Metropolitan in New York. I think when you have made it there, you have made it everywhere.
