The hound's tooth checked pattern frequent on trousers serves to camouflage minor stains. The use of white for other pieces of clothing, especially by highly visible head chefs, is intended to denote cleanliness.

Hi we wear coloured trousers to hide Stains and the colours will show up in the kitchen easily as when your busy you tend to focus around the kitchen you concentrate on your particular job in hand so if you need to wear colourful trousers to get noticed same goes for bandanna's. But officially the colours for the chef industry is white jackets and checked trouser!!!

A chef once told me the trousers are supposed to be white this way the boss could see who was clean and hygenic I suppose thought that wearing multi coloured trousers in and otherwise boring workplace brightens it up abit.

how about this.. haha..
They recycled the colourful aprons to make trousers!
In Hong Kong, most of chefs wear black trousers + big white aprons, especially in 5 stars hotels. It's their uniforms, like those you see in Iron Chefs TV show.

It's part of the uniform. However, just like "casual Fridays", depending on the place you work (or own) you can be creative. It's a chef's job to be creative anyway. It spices up the sometimes dullness of working in a sterile-looking environment all day.
But that's only if the place approves. I had to get my jacket and houndstooth pants from the laundry service.

they were coloured trousers to help cover stains. They traditional colour is now black. They where white aprons over this. and a white jacket, this can also show how clean they are when they work.

They wear them in the vain hope of stopping people putting apostrophes into the plural 'chefs'. Doesn't seem to be working that well though.
