The vagina is acidic and hostile toward sperm. Having so many helps neutralize the acid and more sperm have a good chance at fertilizing the egg. Also, the uterus has 2 fallopian tubes... half the sperm are going to go the wrong way. I believe that only about 10% of the sperm actually get to the egg in a viable state.

There is a very high death rate among the little soldiers, some go in the wrong direction and some make it to the egg and are not strong enough to penetrate the egg.

Ok, millions are released because, the woman's body has natural "defenses" against these little invaders. That's what they're considered to be. Yes also they die off on their own, that's why it can take days to become pregnant. Each of them swimming, yes, they "swim" that's why they have tails, only has a one in a million chance of impregnating the egg.

well the reason men produce so much sperm, I am quite certain is because the men that produce the most sperm probably have the highest probablity of impregnating their mate. 4000 years of breeding the guy who shoots the most dense load has the most offspring.

To ensure one reaches the egg. Sperm is a foreign body in the female uterus and her antibodies attack and kill them.
