There is actualy many answers for that based on a number of factors. First off my backgrouond. 21 years, U.S. Army. I have trained with the British Army and I think individual soldier training is better, The reason is the size of the British Army, which is small and the emphasis they put on individual training. The United Staes does the best Job of large scale force training, thats training a soldier to be part of a larger formation, overall individual training is good but not on the Level of the british. The Isreali Army has the best short term training, and a mobilization plan thats executed often, thats second to none in the world. Personal courage can come from any soldier thats faced with adversity, however The Isrealis do have an ubundance of that due to the number of wars they have been involved in, there personal courage rates high. Just my opinion, but one based on my knowledge anyway.

In my opinion, the best trained army in the world, is without a doubt, the British simply because they have so much history and experience to pass on. It may not be the biggest, most heavily funded or have the biggest, most expensive weaponry, but it is well-structured, the troops go thru some absolutely staggering training.
If we look at the situation in Iraq, it was Brit soldiers who were patrolling peacefully in berets, with a very visable, yet approachable presence in the early days of the "war", and obtained the buy-in of the Iraqi people, whereas the US troops were running around like a bunch of Rambo's doing nothing to win support. This is why the death toll of US troops over there is so staggering. The Brits learned more than any other fighting force about FIBUA and urban combat, as well as "insurgents" during the Lord-knows how many years in Northern Ireland. I understand that some of the lessons and skills learnt here have been passed on to other armies within the Commonwealth(?).
The US is definately the most equipped, most financed army, the Israeli army knows it's stuff but is very heavy handed and totally overereacts, given that they are only fighting small units of their enemies - just look at what they did in Lebanon (again).
To really answer this, you need to look at history and see who came out on top despite massive odds against it.
I would also expect the Russkies to be near the top of the list too.
In order, I'd say the top 5:
Great Britain (and other Commonwealth countries)
Israel
Germany
Russia
US
No offence to the Yanks, but they ain't that well trained, more relying on massive troop numbers and devastating firepower. Just look at what happened in 'Nam. Got their ar$es well and truly whacked, even if they don't admit it / like talking about it, and that was done by an "Army" who had pretty much nothing to fight with but everything to fight for. Also, just look at the state the Yanks have got into in Iraq now.

Israel definitely has the best trained. Every soldier in the Israeli army is trained like our special forces. The US's armed forces are just the biggest and most financed. Unfortunately, our government has always been a big fan of having lots of cannon fodder with only a few well trained special forces. Switzerland would have to be second, with England and Germany in third and fourth, respectively.

Being the biggest and most heavily armed doesnt make you the best trained. Our military along with GB, Germany, Chinese, even NK are large well trained and quite effective. however, you asked for the best trained. Though small due to size of country, the Swiss army is perhaps the best trained, and best equiped, military in the world.

Depends on what you mean?
In terms of applicants being successful then The british SAS is the toughest to get into with a massive 95% of applicants being unsuccessful due to how tough it is, The U.S Navy Seal candidates also have a tough time as they have to go through something called "Hell Week" which is basically a week where you do military exercises without having hardly any sleep, little food, and you are interogated as if you had been captured by the enemy, there success rate is about 90% of candidates get turned away.

I would say the British Army for it's one to one training, and the fact that in peacekeeping they will go in with the softly, softly approach as opposed to sticking a gun in your face to get what they want. Some people on here keep saying the Swiss, no offense but armies should be rated on combat experience to prove their worth, and apart from some fine pocket knives and two world wars where they remained neutral, and for defending the Vatican in silly costumes I have never seen their fighting ability. Sorry.

I don't know why so many people say the USA. If you look at history, the US is 0-for against Canada. But more importantly, they havn't learned anything from their past or world history. The world is NOT lining armies up against each other on battlefields, modern warfare has turned to gurilla warfare and urban combat.Right now the Middle Eastern countries and Asian countries which employ these tactics are the best modern armies in the world until the rest of us catch up or fight them on our terms instead of theirs.

If you have in mind the land army (not including sea and air), India has the best trained army followed by China!
