It has been around a very long time, probably close to 100 years and gelatin comes from the hooves of cloven hoofed animals such as pigs and cows etc. There is where the name Jello came from, from the word gelatin. What they did was boil out and clarify the animal gelatin from the hooves and added sugar, food color and flavorings and Voila,! You have JELLO!

As usual it started as being called Jelly in Europe and because you called JAM -JELLY you needed another word for Jelly and called it JELLO. Same as Biscuits became cookies and sweets became candy. For some reason even if there is already a word (IN ENGLISH) you have to change it for another word. I bought a book for my American friends daughter called Bum Bags and Fanny packs, it is about an inch thick with English words that have been changed.
