I am not a neglectful parent. I am asking because it seems a lot of people have different oppinions. I'm not asking for a website to go see to check out state child abuse and neglect laws. I would just like to know what do you concider child neglect?

IMO? Child neglect is failing to meet the basic needs of a child. Not feeding them regularly. Not clothing a child according to the weather - no coat in winter (lots of places to get one free if in need). Leaving a small child, under the age of 9, unattended for an extended period. Leaving a child in a car, running or no, alone. Allowing young children to run the streets well into the night. Allowing them to be in the company of very low quality people, drug addicts or alcoholics.

Pretty much, anything that endangers the physical or emotional development of a child. Just my opinion. I've seen kids that were overweight, not particularly pristine in cleanliness or with gone-around-the-block worn out hand me downs and they're parents are doing the best they can. The children are loved and looked after fairly well and are well adjusted. I wouldn't consider those parents neglectful.

I believe child neglect comes in many forms. The worst is to treat the child as if they are in the way all the time, ignore them when they need to talk, and make them feel as if they're feelings are not important. This will follow them into their teenage and adult years and will turn into low self esteem and a feeling of worthlessness. Leaving a young child alone at home or in the car is also a form of child neglect. A child needs to be able to act like a child...they have the rest of their lives to worry about things and take care of themselves.I also hate to see a dirty child in just a diaper and no shoes or clothes with the parent dragging them around the store. A child is a gift from God and should be handled with love and care.

Child neglect is leaving a child alone at home before the age of 6.Child abuse is beating or spanking or even yelling at a child. But I think it's stupid and even embarrassing for the children to look after them while they are playing outside. When I was 8,I was allowed to play outside and even go to other neighbourhoods without parents.

well I consider child neglection as not watching your child/children outside on main driving streets or outside by themselves under age 9 yrs. and not getting fed. But some people suspects child neglection even thou you are protecting them while outside and being fed and bathed. I know this from my own life. i was turned in for supossably not feeding or protecting my 16 month old daughter while outside and that so i had to prove that she was taken care of by taking her to the doctor and the age that i had to take her in was 15 months. and at 15 months she was 30 1/2 inches long and 26 pounds and the doctors said that she is perfect weight and her health is great shape.

Not knowing how to bring up the child.
Not seeking help when faced with a serious problem involving the child.
Indulging in activities that are detrimental to the child's health - physical, mental and emotional.
Not meeting the child's basic requirements.

not feeding them when they are hungry
not teaching them right from wrong (not punishing when they are bad and not praising them when they do well)
not dressing them in clean, presentable clothing that fit
not paying attention to their hygeine
not caring for illnesses or injuries
not listening to what they have to say
making them feel unimportant
not making sure they have an education
leaving a very young child to care for a younger child

edited to add - I had a few more for the list but they cross the line from neglect to emotional abuse

Not providing what your child needs, food, water, home, discipline, guidance, security, moral direction( Gods word, I believe), unconditional love and a will to see them succeed. One over looked thing is the presence of both a mother and a father, not any other combination.

Lack of emotional support is a biggie. I also agree with the rest of the mothers out there.

Not watching them when they play outside when there are cars that speed up and down the street. Also near a swimming pool they need excellent super vision. Locking them in a room as punishment.
