This question is for field engineers working in construction.
1_do field engineers do a lot of scheduling and estimation in general?
2_what are the main responsibilities exactly, besides being on the field?
3_suppose someone starts as field engineer for a couple of years, would this experience really matter if that person wants to be transfered to an office to work as project engineer?

Field engineers may estimate and schedule, depending on just what is necessary.
The main responsibilities are to:
1. Supervise day works
2. Prepare or verify progress payments. variations, claims etc.
3. Prepare or confirm hourly day works sheets
4. Check progress against work schedules
5. Verify construction equipment requirements against drawings and specifications
6. Conduct site meetings and inspections
7. Maintain safety standards
To be a GOOD project or design engineer, requires 3 to 5 years as a field engineer to understand and be able to picture engineering practices.

1.- It depends on who you work for, but yes it is not unusual for field engineers to be involved in scheduling and estimating.
2.- Again, this varies with who you work for, but in general most field engineers are involved in scheduling the work, coordinating trades, answering technical questions and/or getting clarifications to questions, qc/qa type activities, over site of subcontractors, and liaison with owners and engineers.
3.- This is a very good experience for someone who wants to end up on the design end in an office. You will have a better understanding of what can be done in the field, better understanding of some of the space issues when installing equipment, and use that knowledge to make better designs upfront.
