He eats any poo he finds, if I don't stop him in time but he prefers his own. We don't like this habit and would like to curb it. Also he likes day old, not fresh. Any comments on how to break this , he is 95 pounds about seven years old in people years, and otherwise a loving, friendly and wonderful friend.

Mine does the same. It is because they have poor sense of taste, they will eat anything, even something dead for a while. So while disgusting, it is not uncommon. Clean up the yard on a regular basis, that will help, maybe increase his feed slightly. Bring treats on your walks. They don't understand how "food" is wrong so it is difficult to break them of this, however, distraction works. If that fails, get him doggy breath mints!

There is a diet supplement at Petco/Petsmart that you can try. It's called Deter and it changes the way the poo smells and tastes. You give the dog a few tablets before each meal and it helps break the habit of the dog eating the poo.

Usually the reason is because a nutrient is missing from their diet. Definitely clean up after them regularly. You can try putting something in their food, like a product called Distaste or some such. What are you feeding him? Maybe try a more balanced food. Also, contact your vet. This could also become a habit over time and once the diet is corrected, he could still do it. Good luck

This is not an unusual K9 behavior. He is seeking the nutrients that is left in the droppings. In the artctic the sled dogs get to eat all the eskimos mornings droppings as it is the only warm meal they get ( the rest is frozen fish ) This may seem a bit weird but it is a reallity non the less. This behavior will not harm your dog but it does make one think about doggy kisses.

It actaully means that they are lacking some type of nutrient in there body. Kinda how pregnant women will crave and eat laundry soap. My shih-tzu was doing that for the longest time (yuck) and i took him to the vet and she gave me some medicine to take home and put on his food. No more eating poo!!!

Unfortunately this is a way of life for Labradors. It won't do him any harm and i have been told there is a reason for this but i can't remember what it is as it was so long ago. I've had 2 Labradors and they both did it!

My dog is a lab and she doesn't eat poop!

He's just looking for a warm meal (-;

Seriously, fresh poop won't harm him, but don't allow him to keep doing this. Poop attracts flies and other vermin. They lay eggs in the poops and when a dog eats it, he might get parasites. Just pick up your dog's poops and dispose of it ASAP.
