Does anyone have eye contact problem ? Perhaps its an offshoot of social phobia that I am suffering from . But how do I cirumvent this problem ? Does drugs like Paxil help in this case ? How can I find a solution for this ? I find it difficult to laugh looking at someone unless the situation is "sarcastic" where less of honest expressions are needed . I am generally concerned aobut other people.. but its difficult for me to laugh and stuff when someone says a friendly joke... Its a difficult life ....with these problems , can anyone suggest a remedy ? Is this caused due to any chemical imbalance or something ?

I agree it is due to lack of trust to some extent. A feeling of paranoia arising due to the tensions of modern life , comptetiton is at its apogee...I have this problem with my own family memebers too , probably arising due to lack of self esteem ( also honestly I dont like displaying "love" it irritates me..i like to keep distance , maybe some kind of ego or vanity ! ...does anyone have this problem ? I am working on doing Pranayama ( ancient indian method...www.divyayoga.com) ... its awesome . Hope I can get okay soon
Thanks

When I was younger I had a huge problem with looking people in the eye. In fact this caused people not to trust me when in fact I was just shy and insecure. As a result I looked at the ground a lot causing my neck to curve.

As I grew older I grew more confident but this pattern became ingrained in me. Two things happened helping me to quit this habit. One was I became more spiritual and looked up more at the sky. Read the book the “Celestine Prophecy” by James Redding. It will among other things teach you how and the importance of noticing beauty in nature.

Secondly I forced myself every once in a while to look people in the eye, even if it was askance and only for a few seconds. Sometimes you do not notice you are even doing it. Once you recognize it is happening force your head and eyes up and look, even if it is for a short time. In time you will be able to do this for longer and longer periods of time. Don't fret it can take years to fully recover but just keep practicing.

Try using a person you trust and ask them if you can just look them in their eyes. Try an animal that you like. They are usually very friendly and non-judging. If you have the desire to change then change can begin.

Personally I would stay well away from the pharmaceuticals. They often create more problems than they solve. In my opinion 90 of all non-accident related conditions can be solved via alternative means, or simply by practicing preventative medicine. It sounds like your issue is more psychological than chemical anyway. Just try my suggestions and see if there is any improvement. E-mail me if you want more suggestions or just support.

I'm sorry for you. You should be aware, chemical imbalances are only a theory and are not provable or testable. Paxil is a very bad drug that may leave you in a much worse state. Please stay away from it, and if that warning is not enough, please see the site below. I have suffered from Paxil for years (12 years), and done extensive research while trying to get off of it - the withdrawal can be horrific, and the symptoms you begin with will magnify after a few years.

yeah it relatively is attentive to what you mean i attempt to maintain eye touch with others as quickly as we are speaking and then i start to sense awkward as quickly as we are observing one yet another for like 10 seconds and look someplace else. I say to maintain eye touch merely concentration on what the different individual is speaking approximately and not approximately awkwardness or tension.

Maybe you're having mineral deficiency or holmonal imbalance
that causes/increases anxiety.
