The woodcutter was the person who carved a picture into a block, or multiple blocks of wood depending on how many colours were to be in the final design. The design was then inked and a piece of paper was placed on top before applying pressure, either with the hand or a tool or a printing press. This prints a mirror image of the 'woodcut' on the paper so the woodcutters had to do all their carvings in reverse. Pretty clever people if you ask me!

I believe that a woodcutter was someone who cut and carved the little blocks of wood with words and letters which would then be set into the printing press to create the type for the newspaper.
