On a scale of 100%, I would say feta cheese is 30% fattening and 70% not fattening. The bad side of feta cheese is that it contains saturated fat (usually 5 or 6g out of 8g per total fat). Saturated fat metabolizes to fat very quickly (i.e. it is stored as fat rather than spent as energy). However, feta cheese also has calcium in it. Calcium is known to decrease the levels of fat storage. Calcium also makes the breakdown of the food more energy consuming. So is protein and feta cheese contains protein, and that is a good thing. Also, protein helps retain or repair muscle mass and that helps a lean body mass because the more muscle you have, the more energy is needed to keep them.

So, if you are dieting you could have some feta cheese in your diet but I wouldn't suggest eating large amounts of it because the unused calories would probably be stored as fat. Also, feta cheese contains sodium. From my own experience, I realized that high sodium food increase my appetite. I don't know why and strangely I have never seen a resource telling that. I would put feta cheese in water to decrease its sodium levels and eat it with a bread high in dietary fiber (e.g. the baker, 5g net carbs, flax...).

Is Feta Cheese Healthy

Of course, but no worse than any other cheese. Feta is 7 grams of fat for a 1/4 cup serving with 4 grams saturated fat. Cholesterol is 25 mg. Sodium is 300 mg. Total carbs are 2 grams. Fiber is 1 gram. Protein is 7 grams.

But it's good for calcium and vitamin A. I don't think I even eat a quarter cup of feta on my salads. So enjoy!

All cheese is fattening... in large quantities. A little cheese every day never hurt anyone.
