I live on my own too. I split up a loaf into small portions (eg two slices) put them into small freezer bags and store them in the freezer. It doesn't take long to thaw them out as needed.

just have a large freezer, anything you don't want right now, bread, veg etc just bung in there. if you cook a, for example, pasta bake, split it into portions then put each one in a freezer tub, you can get these in all supermarkets and the pound shop etc
that way you waist nothing and save a fair amount of money
every morning before you leave the house, take out what you will need for dinner, put it in fridge, that way it will be defrosted by tea time

Freeze 1/2 of your loaf in good freezer bags! If you vacuum pack bread, it will be flat as a pancake!

Food savers work great, if you purchase the high end ones. My brother got my mom a cheaper one and it didn't work very well. He took it back and got a more expensive one and she loves it. However, it is only great if you freeze a lot of food and need to make it last longer. Do not use it on bread, it will pretty much crush it.

Those vacuum storage systems for food never work properly, and they have too many downsides: cost, bulk, etc.

Much better use heavy duty ziplocks, even for liquids. Just make sure you remove as much air as possible from the inside before sealing.

Vacuvin make excellent vacuum food storage containers, but they're jars rather than breadbins. You can buy them from Amazon - a couple of examples of their products are http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vacuvin-Vacuum-Food-Saver-litre/dp/B0001M0G3S/sr=8-22/qid=1158498708/ref=sr_1_22/026-2780832-8548412?ie=UTF8&s=gateway and http://www.amazon.co.uk/Vacu-Food-Wine-Saver-Set/dp/B0001M0G38/sr=8-4/qid=1158498694/ref=pd_ka_4/026-2780832-8548412?ie=UTF8&s=gateway although you'd probably be best off using them for other foods and freezing your bread (at least, that's the system that works best for me).
