We have bought up many cats over the past few years and we have always found that the toms have a pathetic litte cry compared to the more vocal females.

Has anybody else experienced this?

Sometimes it's not necessarily the sex of the cat, it can also be the breed. My siamese mix (female) is much louder than the rest, but by far one of my males is far more vocal and whines alot when you leave the room (especially if he's all cuddly and warm and then you get up!)
Many times the females at the age of puberty or hormone surges, they can be louder not only in thinking to round up their litter, but also to attract males.
My cats sometimes will whine and meow so loud after I mop the floor and it leaves a certain smell, or sometimes when they feel like the litter box isn't clean enough, or if they are out of food.
Just think of it like this. Cats have personalities too, and just like use females, some are just louder than others!

The females have to be more vocal in order to keep track of their kittens. Males only get loud when they are fighting, mating or begging for food. This does sound vaguely familiar...it could almost go into the jokes and riddles section. Sometimes there are a lot of similarities between the human and animal kingdoms. Have a good day!

Same applies to cats, dog as well as humans its an individual animal thing some are just louder than others.
I have owned couple of tom cats and my sister some female cats and mine are louder than hers.
Its a personality thing

I certainly haven't. My male cat is more annoying (in frequency of crying and length of the cry) and louder than any female cat I've owned. My neighbor has two male cats one cries a lot and the other is quiet. The female cats in my neighborhood are very quiet and don't usually meow much.

Guess it just depends on the cat as it does just depend with humans.
