Religion helped with us not destroying each other because there is judgment outside of mans laws. Before religion I could bash your brains out for a biscuit without any remorse or sense of judgment.

As a religious person...I believe God gave us free will...therefore he is not keeping everyone in check...which is why we need him. I believe when he made us "in his image" he gave us the power that he has of controlling our surroundings by making good and bad decisions....if everything we did was right...we would never know because their would be no wrong to compare it to....so people figured we needed so set up some type of societal order that at least everyone generally knows about as to not have complete and utter chaos. Unfortunately...survival instincts mixed with stupidity can create a strange place...so balancing laws for the common good while protecting individual freedoms has historically been a very tough thing to do

it is a lot longer than 5000 years. the positions of tribe leader and tribe shaman existed in primitive hunter gatherer human groups for at least 50000 years and maybe even before. these 2 leading figures in the tribe social organization must have had a custom or law of the tribe to support their status. The Shaman position must be based on some sort of religion - belief in the supernatural and the ability of the shaman to communicate with the supernatural

whenever two or more people interconnect with each other they are each entitled to certain rights as mortals. therefore certain rules and regulations should be agreed upon in order to secure these rights. this is why and how Cultures and Societies were developed eons of time ago. the Culture and Society you were born in existed long before you became a part of it and will continue long after you are no longer a part of it.

throughout mans history there have always been men who sought ways to be the leader and to keep his fellow man in check .
it was no different in Jesus's time ,i feel he was a gift to the world a master teacher ,he was dangerous and his philosphies were dangerous because it gave people hope and understanding ,it gave them self respect ,unfortunately about 300 years after Jesus's teachings a ruler called Julian felt his teachings were not keeping the masses controlled enough ,he ordered the book burned murdered many religous leaders and founded his own "BIBLE" having his own "relgious "fractions actually altering many many teachings [that is why the bible seems like it is missing certain things, why Jesus"s teachings are so limited ]only MAN could make a book that is so difficult to understand and so subject to hundreds of interpetations .
so rules were set in place so that people would feel they had to attend churches and tithe and all the things that hold people in fear .
and just for added info ,it is believed that Jesus taught us about re-incarnation ,about how to be healers ,which gave people way to much power .only through the fear of going to hell and making us afraid of life and making us feel like sinners right from the moment of birth were the men in power able to achieve their goal of ultimate power .
making us fear God and Fear for our eternal souls ,but thats the point isnt it ,,,eternal souls -------------------------we each and every one of us have a soul that shall not perish .
so the power shifted and people were literally brainwashed and not taught the truth ,only what "goverment and leaders "deemed would be in their best interest .
anyway there is a therory for you .food for thought .

It depends what you define as rules. Ever since we began to build civilisations we've had roles to play, such as hunting and whatnot. I think the first proper rules that we had in society were those preached to us religiously. Love our fellow man and all that.

I agree with you that this is the source of religion but this does not mean that god does not exist.
