He afraid the Muslims will terrorize is butt

For example:

For a non-christian to criticize by stating a truth about the misbehavior of christian leaders during the second world war would be taken as an insult; it is true, the Vatican did not defend the people against governments.

It could be the Pope was trying to show how negative statements were being made about Muslims back in time, and that we should correct that. I am certain similar statements can be found about Christians.

Perhaps the Pope and the people of this world will learn anytime you make a negative comment, be it as part of commentary, you place yourself in a vulnerable position as it can be used against you, even though it is merely part of the truth you were trying to say.

+ Be positive in all you say and do, this way it cannot be used against you, in one form or another.

Because he did not intend to offend anyone. Of course the Muslims are now being very offended by his statement, and are demanding an apology. Everyone knows how crazy Muslims can get when their religion 'is disgraced' (Danish cartoons etc.). A comment like that could spark World War III. The Pope is apologising because he didn't intend any harm over his comment, which was in fact a quote. Islam is just overreacting as usual, not doing anyone, least of all themselves, any good.

It was irresponsible, but that doesn't stop it being true to an extent. You know there are muslims burning effigies of the Pope around the world now... is Islam the only religion that has followers who want to murder anyone who badmouths them? Do they have no laws against that in their scriptures?

The Pope can't really comment on Islam like that though, look at what Christians have been like in the past. They've massacred many Muslims, Pagans and the pre-Christian ages are referred to as "Dark ages" just because they didn't worship the Christian god.

He is NOT apologizing, just saying that he is sorry that Muslims overreact to his use of a quote six hundred years old.
Maybe finally we have a world leader who is not afraid to rub Muslims the wrong way.

If I called you stupid and you demanded an apology, how would you feel if I said, "I'm sorry you're stupid"?

That's the equivalent of what pope Nazinger said.

He should have also admitted to the Christian atrocities-the Inquisition and the Crusades. Christians are so holy? I think not.
