hi,
First, don't pay for Anti-Virus software, there are plent of free software available, and the top bunch are much better than the software you have to pay for!
Do not touch Norton or McAfee or PCCillin They are atrocious at finding virues, and in Nortons case it can really slow down your PC.
AOL Active Virus Shield (Yes AOL!) is the best one as it using the engine from Kaspesrky Antivirus 2006 which you would have to pay for.
So I recommend AOL Active Virus Sheild for a free version. You could also try AVG Free at www.avgfree.com which is nice and fast too.

DO NOT go with McAfee. I have it and its a memory hog!!! Try AVG its free and its pretty good. I had a problem w/ Norton. I bought the program and every yr renewed on line. At about yr 4 I had a problem and couldnt get my updated virus definitions, called Norton and their only answer was to uninstall and reinstall with original disk. But my original disk version was too old and it didnt work. Tech help was useless (after hours and hours).

1. You've had the Geek Squad look at your system.
2. You've had not one, but TWO people in IT try to help.
3. You've got a bunch of replies here.
Odds are, you're still scratching your head. Why? Simple, really. Windows PCs are not designed for the end user. They're designed to create work, and therefore income for the consultants who sell them. Even your friends who work in IT but don't 'sell' computers are pushing Windows on you. Why? Because it creates job security. If they keep everyone buying Windows, there will be plenty of problems in the future for them to fix.
So how do you break this cycle of abuse? Easy: Get a Mac. Things just work on a Mac, and you won't have any problems with viruses or spyware.

I recommend the AVG as well. I work for a regional ISP (internet phone support), and we have been seeing increasing problems with Norton & McAffee (especially the full-blown "security packages") being buggy & bloated...
