1 Corinthians 11:5 But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
Women don't have to remain in absolute silence, they just can't be the authoritive teacher and leader of the congregation. Paul's concern in the above passage was that women not step out of their God ordained role and usurp the leadership role of men in the church. In the passage you cite, as someone else pointed out the meaning of the word translated as "speak" has a larger meaning than just saying something.
1 Corinthians 14:34 Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak (laléoÌ); but they are commanded to be under obedience, as also saith the law.
G2980
λαλεÌÏ
laléoÌ; To talk at random, as contrasted with légoÌ (G3004) which involves the intellectual part of man, his reason. It is used especially of children with the meaning of to talk much.

Such crap. I don't believe everything I read. I believe in God and in the bible to a certain extent...but there are some things that my instinct tells me just don't make any sense.
I venture to guess is was something to do with the times, and that even God knows that people have evolved from those days. I believe the whole idea has to be related to the issue of respect, and probably in those days, women weren't regarded with high esteem and just were expected to be quiet. Look at how with Islam, just men pray in the churches and not women. They pretty well are close to what religion must have been like in those days....definitely the lifestyle and mentality is.

1st of all, Paul was an unmarried dude. So he encouraged others to do the same. There's a misconception when the people use the word Bible. The Bible refers to both the new and old testament together. Whereas what the modern Christians refer to as the Bible is the New Testament. The New Testament is basically written by Paul despite the fact he was not an apostle.
As for the women part, these were Paul's opinions, not Jesus or Peter's or others.

Women are given the authority to teach other women.
Titus 2:3 The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;
4 That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,
But they are not given permission to teach over men. The reason is not cultural, but goes back to creation:
1 Timothy 2:12 But I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.
13 For Adam was first formed, then Eve.
14 And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression.
To answer other questions before they arise:
While Deborah was a judge, and both Priscilla and Aquilla are described as teaching, there is no record in Old Testament or New Testament of any woman approved of God in a public teaching role over men.

Nope, that verse pretty much sums up how women are to behave in church. Unfortunately because men have yielded their position as spiritual leaders the vacuum caused has sucked women into the fray. Men are spiritual weaklings. Just look at Adam, all he would have had to do was say no. Eve was a born leader, she got Adam to do exactly what he wanted to do.

Women are not the spiritual head of the home if they are married. Women are allowed to teach women or children, but never adult men. 1 Timothy 2:12

this was written in a different time period when the Culture and Society deemed Ladies were second class citizens at best. Both Culture and Society have changed over the years and now Ladies in most modern Cultures and Societies have recognized this earlier thinking has become obsolete. Ladies now have the same rights and privileges in these modern times in most modern Cultures and Societies.

All Abrahamic religions give women the short end of the stick; it is a way of maintaining control. Of the three (judaism, christianity, and islam) judaism seems to be the only one that acknowledges that women even have a brain (see the story of Lillith). As far as christianity is concerned women "guided" man right out of Eden.

That's a really really really old book. The world has come a long way since then. People who still use the Bible to dictate their conduct are limiting themselves to the stone age. That includes people who take PARTS of the Bible and make their OWN religion out of it. Join the human race in the 21st century. We're all waiting for you to break the chains of your opressive religion and use common sense to guide your code of ethics
