how about discussing consequences for behaviors... personally, I think it's better to communicate the rules and the consequences before they are broken. be consistant and the "punishment" should always fit the "crime"

I take away all electronic device priveledges until whatever I want him to do is done. That includes TV, Videos, Ipod, Cell phone, computers, play station. Once the cord has been pulled he cooperates with the task to get them back. Dr. Phil had an excellent 14 yr old behavior program this week. Go to www.drphil.com . Good luck. It is a tough age. My older one was so tough I paid for him to be at a military prep school for 4 yrs. That helped him a lot.

Alternate forms of punishment in relation to... what are you currently trying?
My suggestions, having dealt with my own children, are to remove television watching privlidges, phone privlidges, do not allow him to spend time with friends, and he should have to stay indoors and perform cleaning jobs around the house. Not all at the same time of course, but see what you can do. The goal is simply to get him to understand that for every action there is a reaction, and in this case, it's usually greater!
Good luck, that's a very tough age for both the child and the parent.

at fourteen he is as tough as any man so castration is a good one that way he wont seed any of his kind again.
The Romans used to put naughty boys in fire ant mounds and cut of a toe then fill the wound with peppers so he would roll about in the nest in agony as the ants ate their flesh . but i guess he is fourteen so you've already tried these simple punishments so why not just tell him that he is your son you love him but at the time he is doing wrong you don't like him and he is just a total failure and has let all those that love him down, shame is a really heavy tool if no results please refer to the punishments above lol.

After the age of 10 he's already established who he is, how he is. Ok maybe a few changes. But for the most part he is who he is. If nothing has worked so far, and if its nothing serious, just let it go. Sometimes as parents of teens we freak out at the smallest things.

Take away the things he likes best like tv or video games or computers for a week or so. This always has worked on my son.

naughty step. it's humiliating and disabling. I know it works for younger kids of like age 3/4. But it'll humble him a bit...perhaps. Well, it might work :)
put them on the step, he has to sit there for 14 minutes. he plays up whilst there give him an extra minute.

Spanking... more spanking.
Not giving him what he wants.
Telling him no all the time.
Making him clean everyday until he finally realizes he's getting nowhere with his bad attitude.
