I know I'm not bothered about what he says - but then I'm not catholic.

Why should anyone of a particular religion expect those of another religion or no religion to adhers to their religions rules? I don't get it?

Because the 80 year old German in a silly hat has the power to influence millions of people around the world? Personally I think that's strange but sadly it's true.

I do think it's unacceptable to expect people from outside a religion to adhere strictly to all of your religious rules and customs, but since most religions have broadly similar principles that shouldn't be a problem. I do think though that people have the right to a certain amount of acceptance of religious differences, providing that everyone is still abiding by the laws of the country they are in.

Of course, how much can anyone who doesn't speak German get offended by what the pope said, since the speech isn't available in translation.

They have to defend their religion as they are offended. But it is the leaders who have misled them by not understanding that his remarks were not meant to be inflammatory. Leaders incite violence and hate. But I suppose the painful fact is that some religions have spread by the sword, and so it hits a raw nerve. People don't like the apostle of their faith to be attacked either. Sometimes quoting criticism becomes implicit condonement of the criticism quoted. Would you be happy if someone slandered your mother ( even if what they said was true)? I think we all need to be sensitive. Why do we need a pope anyway? What does he hope to achieve by making political statements? Popes are successors of the Roman Emperor Constantine who made Christianity the official state religion. That is why they inherit the Title of Pontifex Maximus from the Emperors. It's al politics. The trouble is Catholics and Muslims do not make a distinction. They are both Theocracies. Rome rules millions if not more from that little religious state, ans Islamised lands outlaw all other religions except the more moderate nations.

Why is everyone so hung up on the fact that the pope was in the hitler youth. It doesnt mean he supported Hitler's actions. Hitler's own soldiers didn't know why they were rounding up Jews so how was a little boy supposed to know. The hat is not silly by the way. and your comment is quite offensive to catholics. Thats how all this starts, with silly little comments like that. There can be no peace if everyone disregards others' beliefs.

it is an issue because he is a religious leader. he completely slated their religion and holy figures. he has such a wide following himself, that it was unresponsible of his to express those views publically-especially in today's climate.

he has a responsibility not to say stupid things.

i agree that he shouldn't expect people to conform to christianity, but he cant just say what he likes, especially seeing as he was in the hitler youth and people are a bit dubious about him anyway!!! what was he thinking??? its really worrying to me that he would make a comment like that, and then be surprised that there was a backlash.

im actually offended for Muslims

Islam is afraid if anyone will say anything bad about them. It shows the baseless nature of the religion. Look at the Islamic countries. Nowhere there is freedom for medias. What they are afraid is if someone will bring unpleasant truths about them. Any non Muslim who lives in an Islamic country will clearly understand it.

I agree with you. It doesnt make sense. Its not like he's gonna change anything with what he says. Shure some people will agree with him, but will what he says really cause any harm to the Muslims? I say they should not be botherd.
