It's supposed to last 4-6 weeks; mine lasted 6-10 weeks after all three pregnancies. The actual red blood stopped at 2-3 weeks but the pinkish/bownish discharge lasted longer. Everyone is different.

I would love to help you, but when my wife started her first period after giving birth she lasted for weeks. We found out it was her birth control that she was taking that made her period last so long. Once, she stop taking the birth control....her period stopped and then she started with her birth control again and continued having regular periods after that. Was kinda weird situation for us. Sorry, I am probably no help to you, but it brought up the memory and I wanted to share it with you. Good Luck.

What you're referring to is called Lochia and while you're bleeding, just as you do for a 'period', it's different because you're body is cleaning out what ever was left from your pregnancy, ie. mucous, any remaining placental tissue. In the average woman, it lasts about 2 to 3 weeks, can last up to 5 or 6, depending on the individual and whether or not you're breastfeeding.

if you mean the bleeding after you've given birth then it can take upto 6 weeks but if you mean the first period after that then its usually upto a week, but everyone is different, i can only speak from my own experience, it can take up to 12 months for your periods to come back to normal after haveing a baby as it takes that long for your body to get back to normal

Doctors usually say to give it 6 weeks and if it hasnt stopped mention it to your gp. In saying that mine lasted a good 8 weeks, but I had a very preterm baby.
