I have an obssessive compulsive disorder(OCD). I was diagnosed with depression and OCD. My problem is I constantly clear my throat and nasal every minute I can. It not only is hurting me but my relationship with my spouse. I have tried medication, I don't like taking them. Is there another method I can try. I don't have the money or the resources to go to a doctor anymore. I need something to help. I don't want my relationship to worsen because of this. Please Help Me!!!!

I see where everyone is coming from with the sinuses. But I do it when I'm concentrating, or just doing nothing at all. It's all the time. I've seen a doctor about my sinuses before the medication didn't work it's not physical really.

My heart gores out to you. This isn't easy. You said you don't like taking the prescribe medication. But Did it help? Did you discuss with your doctor the side effects of the medicine and other alternatives? You may want to discuss medicine for anxiety. Although medical information on the Internet is not always reliable, after wadding through a few hours of junk one can usually find a few gems. Surely there are chat groups on line that will help you with support and tips for control. I cannot stress strongly enough to stay away from the "natural remedies" sold on-line. In my grandmothers day they were called "snake oil salesmen" and are no better today. Those only line the pockets of the jerks selling the stuff.

Suggestions include keeping your home and work place as cheerful, clutter free and stress free as possible. Spend one hour a day of "me" time (walking, bubble bath, meditation, gym work out). Spend time each day concentrating on doing something you know your husband will like (favorite meal, tickets to a local HS football game, massage, wash his car ...)

The link I have provided is for people with hyper-thyroidism. This is a well monitored site, with lots of nice people trying to help each other. They are also pretty knowledgeable about other medical issues. If you post on there, I am sure you will get a positive answer pointing you toward some on-line help.

Take it one step at a time. Habits are hard to break all at once. When you are conscious of what you are doing, resist for a little while, put your mind on something else. When the habit weakens, you should start forgetting about it shortly after such resistance.

You might also have a natural problem, like dehydration or hay fever. If your throat is dry, try more liquid like water. If you have nasal congestion, try getting rid of dust and maybe even see your doctor about whether you need hay fever medication. When you vacuum the dust, use a vacuum cleaner that doesn't emit much dust if possible and use a dust mask to reduce dust intake while vacuuming. Open windows to get dust out of the air.

Probably the most important thing is to take small steps. Don't expect too much too fast.

This will be hard, but try carrying something with you that you can transfer the compulsion onto- for instance, like a small (empty) vitamin container that you can tweek the lid of every time you want to clear your throat. Or a piece of paper to scrunch up. Or a tiny plastic wallet full of coins you can squeeze if you feel urged.

You don't need lots of money but it will take a lot of conscious effort. Don't think of it purely as OCD, just a challenge to overcome. The trick is preparing for what is about to happen and reminding yourself to get out of your bad habit, so you might have to make a few personality changes elsewhere!

Another tactic - this is unpleasant - is shock tactics that might put you off the whole thing altogether, like seeing the long-term effects, such as seeing your insides ripped out. Nasty, but true.

edit: K, try tensing the area where you feel most inclined so you can't actually cough up to clear it. It's your brain, so it's in your power- i would try breathing exercises to get you back into a good habit.

It seems that if you were so scared that you would ruin your relationships, that you would take the medications as prescribed. Go back to treatment.
