My hair is long, but not long enough for it all to be tied back

When i wash it it fluffs up and sticks out like a white mans afro (terrible)

When i dont wash it for a few days, its more managable, but its oily and im worried if it smells

What can i do to it? i used to be a gel boy, and gel and long hair just dont work

Any help is greatly needed, as i love long hair, and i really dont want to cut it.

Wash it daily, put a band around it (pony tail) and enjoy.

Well I definitely agree with your opinion that gel and long hair never go together. What about wearing a headband? I've found an ad saying 'A wide crochet fabric headband is the essential hair accessory for guys with long hair. Add style to your pony tail do.' I think the headband will make you look neat as well as trendy. I hope this helps! =)
