When you distill it down to its very basics, living a positive life with a positive attitude essentially winds up with this:
1. A respect for people and their contributions, especially yours.
2. A belief that things happen for a reason, and that reason serves you, whatever it is.
3. A conviction that no matter how good or how bad things may be, they're going to get better -- and you can help make them become so.
4. A knowledge that positive people are the ones who make the difference in life -- how many cynics do you know who have ever done anything worthwhile?
5. A dedication to live a positive life, no matter what.
6. An understanding that good things happen -- repeatedly -- to those people who are looking out for them.
7. A commitment to form and foster positive habits, and decrease negative ones.

The reality is people only lack self confidence when dealing with a topic they are unsure about. If you think about the last time you had a passionate discussion about anything you will realise that you don't lack confidence. So you have proved you have it.
Now all you need do is learn how to turn it on when you need it.
Isolate the real problem then deal with it, remember any emotions including depression are not real, love hate etc are not physical. You cant find a bucket of love or hate. Same with depression its not real. Its something you choose because its easier than dealing with the real issue.
I am depressed because I am skint. Focus on making more money- no longer skint no depression. I am depressed because I am unloved- get out more. Meet more people.
I am depressed because i haven't been promoted at work- study more change jobs work harder someone somewhere else is doing it why cant you.
So buy a book any book on self motivation read it get on with it and stop focussing on the problem and start on the solution. there is a guy called Martyn ward that I believe has a book that is very good but there are loads around.

There are plenty of self help books available that can point you in the right direction. It is not easy to improve your self confidence, but it can be done, over a period of time.
You say that you don't think you lack self confidence but this could a form of denial. Try asking your friends to explain what they mean and to give you a few examples and listen to them with an open mind. If you are still convinced they are wrong, then you can tell them so.
Good luck and be happy!

One of the things that helped me, was the realisation that, no matter what has been done to me and who has hurt me in the past the only person responsible for my future happiness is myself.
So if I spend time dwelling on the awful things that have been I'm just laying up more misery for the present and future.
Try to take pleasure in little things, give yourself very small achievable goals and every time you say something negative about yourself or your life - you have to say 5 positive things! Gradually, day by day things should improve and you should start to feel better!
Good luck!

your own mind and thoughts made you this way (i understand that situations and problems give you the opportunity to be depressed) and only your own mind can solve this, be strong and if you catch your self thinking bad thoughts - tell em to f*ck off and then smile. repeat for a month or two and see the change

try and see the funny side of things. humour is positive. when you laugh it lifts your mood. when you are feeling down, try to tell yourself that it wont always be like this. out of the dakest clouds come the greatest transformations.
