I've always dyed my hair and as the grey comes through its very tempting to grab the dye. To keep the grey out I need to colour it every 2 or 3 weeks. Surely there must be a time when I can stop having to do this and still look ok?

If you are tempted to dye your hair do it , keep to something natural, or be eccentric like me I am 53 & am not ready for the blue rinse brigade yet!!! usually use a colour called Deep Plum! and am tempted to use one called Mystic Purple!! though haven't been brave enough yet, may be for Christmas, if I don't like it I will let it grow out and go back to what I am comfortable with, emphasis on that last bit!! Don't worry what others think life is too short!!....................

now then, where did I put that box of hair dye???? :-)

I don't think you will look bad I think that what really makes a person look ancient is when they are dying their hair a harsh colour and they are obviously intended by nature to be grey, this is very sad. As you've always dyed your hair you don't want to stop suddenly though, that will look tragic. Replace your hair dye with a semipermanent colour in the same colour. Then keep that up until all the permanently dyed hair has been cut out, then gradually change to lighter colours until you can stop altogether without it looking too sudden. It's that solid block of grey roots you want to avoid. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised by how good you will look.

Don't forget that with grey hair you will need to revise all your makeup colours.

Sure there is, you can stop dying ur hair now if you want too! This may sound strange but thier are people with grey hair that dont look half bad. At 53 its not exactly to go and get bright pink highlights lol so if your fed up of colouring and colouring then dont bother and be pleased with how you are. You know if u keep colouring too often it can affect your hair, good luck!

Hi, I am 54 too and always keep my hair dyed. I splash out and get it professionally done with foils in several colours. When it is newly done I gel it for a very messy spiky look but as it grows outI wear my hair in a long fringe combed forward from the top of my head. this hides all the hair below the colouring so I don't need to redo it so often. I only go to the hairdresser about twice a year so feel justified in paying top rates. I also have several good wigs for a quick fix but they are not comfortable to wear long unless you are used to them.

I'd say it depends on your complexion. If you have the right 'look', dying hair can enhance your looks. But I have noticed some people that look a lot older than their hair might lead us to believe (if you know what I mean!) I'm sure you can look equally glamorous with grey hair as you could with coloured hair. I have no intention to dye my hair when I reach a certain age. I suppose it's more of an issue with women than men though!

You don't say how gray you are, but there are a number of women who look wonderful and not ancient with the gray hair. In fact, when all the hair is gray the person has white hair instead (hair doesn't gray it just doesn't have color and when you have dark hair the hair without color is just white). It is how you carry yourself that will determine if you look ancient with white hair or not.

this depends on your face and figure and what you mean by grey....if you mean literally grey, then yes youll look ancient,but.....
let me tell you that as a 30 something man, i sometimes swoon over classy older women with SILVERY- grey hair. i think such a woman can look majestic, full of experience and knowledge......yes thats it; it has to be complemented with sharpness of intellect to work best.
sophisticated older women [with silver hair] can be gorgeous.
