I know that citrus flavor, vanilla, and other spices go in to create the overall flavor. And that kola nuts aren't even used anymore by most colas. But originally, was the kola nut put in strictly for the caffeine, or was it the base flavor as well? And are their flavor substitutes for the kola flavor now in colas, or did they just drop the kola flavor alltogether?

I have tasted the Kola nut once in my life. People here in africa still chew on it but i would say that we prefer the taste of Coca cola. It has nothing to do with the taste of the drink though. It was found that the coca leaf was used originally but there's no proof that the Kola nut was ever used in production.
