This would never have happened under Pope Benedict's predecessor Pope John Paul.
No, the reaction of Muslims to Pope Benedict shows us that this Pope is far from Infallible compared to his predecessor Pope John Paul.
The sad thing about all this is as The Guardian says "In the perceived clash between the West and the Muslim world - this Pope seems to have abdicated his papal role of arbitrator, and taken up arms in a rerun of a medieval fantasy."
Famously, the then Cardinal Ratzinger once referred to Buddhism as a form of masturbation for the mind - a remark still repeated among deeply offended Buddhists more than a decade after he said it. Even his apology to Muslims at the weekend managed to bring Jews into the row.
"An elderly Catholic nun has already been killed in Somalia, in retaliation for the Pope's remarks; churches have been attacked in the West Bank. How is this papal stupidity going to play out in countries such as Nigeria, where the tensions between Catholics and Muslims frequently flare into riots and death? Or other countries such as Pakistan, where Catholic communities are already beleaguered? Or the Muslim minorities in Catholic countries such as the Philippines - how comfortable do they feel this week?"
"Two lines of thought emerge from this mess. The first is that the Pope's personal authority has been irrevocably damaged; how now could he ever present himself as a figure of global moral authority and a peacemaker after this?"
"The second is a more disturbing possibility: namely, that the Catholic church could be failing - yet again - to deal with the challenge of modernity."
For a Spiritual leader, Pope Benedict appears to have intellectual knowledge without spiritual substance and wisdom. He has been irresponsible and insensitive, and looked foolish especially when people are killed as a result of his thoughtless actions and decisions. Not Infallible to me.
Pope John Paul tried to build bridges between faiths and peoples.
Pope Benedict, however, seems intent on burning them. Hasn't the world got enough hatred and troubles without further enflaming the fires in these violent times.

Well, a Muslim tried - about 20 years ago.
The result was that the Pope forgave him, he (Mehmet Ali Agca) 'became Christian', and (perhaps not coincidentally) also became completely certifiably hatstand, and spend a good many years in jail.
They were talking about releasing him a year or two ago but I don't think they did.

Obviously the Pope dies. Catholicism lives on with another Pope. The murderer will be celebrated by some. Moderates will hastily dissociate themselves from such an action. People will still fail to see the truth as religion is bondage and only the truth can set you free. Jesus said, "I am the Way the Truth and the Life - no man can come to the Father (that is God and not the pope) except through Me." Sadly few will recognise the truth and will persist in their error religious or otherwise. Jesus said that His kingdom is not of this world, or HIs servants would have borne swords, but His Kingdom is from above. He is the Prince of Peace. He taught to "turn the other cheek" when slapped and not to argue with our enemies but to forgive them and to bless them and to do good to them. Oh that people would abandon organised religion and follow these sound words from the man who spoke the truth! "No murderer has eternal life dwelling in him". God will punish sinners even if they claim to be Christian. Jesus said many would claim to follow and serve Him but would not be permitted into heaven as they are evildoers. So then not anyone claiming to be a Christian will make it but only those who do the good things God expects them to do. And you won't be capable of pleasing a good God unless you admit your offenses first and turn to Him with all your heart forsaking your natural tendency to live for yourself. Then you will know how to live for God and to love your neighbour and do good to them. Love never did any harm to its object but only good. By this score the Crusades, Inquisitions and many atrocities including the Iraq war is quoted by some to show how Christianity is guilty of much wars atrocities and violence. Well then, abandon "Christianity" and follow the Jewish Messiah, called Christ , a transliteration of the greek "Christos". He never taught that and his servants condemned violence. It is wrong to associate Jesus with any of the abuses conducted in His Name. He will condemn them at the judgement. But readers, are you sinless? Will you escape God's judgment? Or are you self-righteous unmerciful and unforgiving? Blessed are the merciful for they shall obtain mercy. But you who say "do not murder" do you hate? Are you calling for judgement rather than for mercy? What if the sinner repents? will you call for his execution? How then can you be forgiven for your sins? What makes you more deserving?

Muslim leaders have not called for the assassination of the pope, nor would they want to. The pope has apologised for his stupid (at most) comment and the Muslim council of Britain has accepted his apology whilst calling him a noble man.
Also, Muslims have not been vandalising churches world wide. The incident you refer to took place in the west bank. If a person was ever to crack under pressure it would be a person who was living in the west bank under the persecution of the terrorist state of Israel.
I take this question as as an attempt to stir sh*t.

its unlikely to happen, considering the amount of security around the Pope, it would be easier to take a pop at the Queen instead. you might as well chuck meringues at a fleet of Panzer tanks

the fact that you mentioned 'muslim leaders' is enough to conclude that you are ignorant, give me one head of state of any of the muslim country or any leader who called for an assasination. Wake up from your closed world!
No one is asking for the pope to be murdered!!!

Both sides are just looking for an excuse to start a war. That will probably trigger it.

I would hope that the Christian belief in forgiveness before vengeance would prevail. No one is perfect, but we could hope that the memory and teachings of a spiritual leader would guide the flock.
