Bipolar Disorder is caused by a complex collection of gene mutations, which are so far unknown. One must be prone to developing bipolar disorder AND experience a number of situations that actually cause the disorder.
Although the disorder is sometimes hereditary, there is no exact known cause for it.
You say your doctor gives you anti-depressants, but if you're bipolar you should take a mood stabilizer. Are you sure you are correct? If you take a mood stabilizer such as lithium or zyprexa (olanzapine), you can always ask to higher the dose.
If the drug truly makes you feel suicidal, you can always ask for another one.
I heard that EFA's (Essential Fatty Acids) also aid in bipolar disorder. They contain Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids. It's a fully natural product with no side effects. Maybe you can discuss it once with your doctor. (see URL)

It isn't always genetic. Although, someone in your mother or father's family a long time back could have had this. Many people start having this problem for the first time in their teens for no apparent reason. It usually develops after a severe stressor has happened and your brain can't cope anymore so your brain learns to cope its own way. Lithium is the best med, and there are many other meds out there. This is going to be a life long struggle for you and you will probably be on meds the rest of your life, and if you stop taking them, the symptoms will worsen and the episodes will be worse than they are now. Hang in there. Get involved in group therapy and explore your problems and some things that you know or feel could have led up to your first episode of depression and mania. Bipolar has two phases, which are mania, extreme happiness, can't stop doing things, very hyper abnormal behavior. The other side is depression, where you feel low, down and even some people become suicidal. That is why you are on meds to stabilize a happy medium between the two phases. Read up on bipolar disorder on the internet, the library and ask your doctor for pamphlets and ask him your questions. You will get an abundance of info. Don't blame yourself. Good luck and learn and ask all the questions you need to better help yourself.

The illness tends to run in families and appears to have a genetic link. There is a chance someone in you family had this. But it could have skiped a geneation. You should try and find out. Antidepressants & Suicide, FDA Warns-------------------
antidepressants can become suicidal in the first weeks of therapy and that physicians should watch patients closely when first giving the drugs or changing dosages. The FDA is asking drug manufacturers to place explicit warnings about the drugs' side effects, including the risk of suicide, on their labels.

Well no-one is like you in your family cos no-one is going to be just like you 100%. If your hyped then learn to focus your energy at something, like a punchbag, or a crazy gym routine.
Energy really kills depression, so if you doubt it then you're not. Antipsychotic drugs are supposed to regulate a psychotic personality not just for sending you to sleep. If you want to sleep.. use that energy properly and start doing something you feel is constructive.. if that fails smoke some weed.. that is my prescription

Why don't you try some hobbies that could release your manic energy such as playing drum, rock climbing, snowboarding, paintball etc... something that's rather extreme but still accepted as safe by general people. If you have family members or friends who would do the activities with you, it could add more fun. Good luck!

You are the victim of bad luck. Some people don't have a genetic component to their bipolar disorder. Having said that, there are people who have bipolar disorder who don't have anyone in their family with bipolar disorder, but do have people with major depression. You can have relatives with depression and wind up with bipolar disorder

It could just be bad luck.
It might be worth looking at your diet to check if something you are eating is the problem. See a dietician.

Please do not stop taking your meds without speaking to your Dr's that are treating you. I know that my brother suffers from b-polar and he has to take sleeping meds as well. But please do speak to your Dr's. I wish you the best of luck in your future.
