As well as the printer, the paper is also important. If you're using an ink-jet printer get high quality ink-jet paper. Apart from that, you may have to tweak settings, e.g. Gamma correction, on the program you're using for printing. A bit of trial and error is involved.

A photographer friend told me her photos were looking very poor and hung around to watch the developers do her film. They were printing her digital photos from her camera (at a lower resolution than she had taken them), then scanning the prints and placing them on a disc to give to her! I swear. The lint on the glass of the scanner was clearly evident. This was beyond stupid! She found this happening in several places. (Evidently, this is how they were used to turning film pics into digital files.) I finally was able to show her how to download her files from her camera herself and she got a top of the line laser printer and good photo paper and is much happier with her photo quality.

You need either a better printer or when you go to print, look at your options and settings and preferences and make some adjustments. I have a good printer and a bad printer when it comes to printing photographs. The "bad printer" prints text most excellently, but photos look like pure dirt. Pure. Go to the library and use their color printer. Put your photos on a disk, flash drive or email them to yourself. They (we) are there to help ya!!

When you open your printer click on 'properties' and check it's set to print 'best quality photo'.
My printer tends to print photos dark so I always over lighten the picture on screen before printing.
Hope this helps.

Down to 2 things, resoloution of your camera, less than 2 million pixels and prints will be poor and then it depends on the quality of your printer.

It's probably the printer. Take your photos down to walmart and have them printed professionally (very, VERY cheap) and compare this to what came off your printer.

What you need is a photo quality printer, and as with most things you get what you pay for.
Keep away from lexmark though rip off prices on cartridges

Check the resolution of your printer and your pics - do not skimp on the camera resolution. A good 6mp camera should print very respectably at 300dpi on A4.
