Hi: You are comparing yourself to your friend's diagnosis. Obviously, she must have other symptoms for her doctor diagnosing her with this. If you have other symptoms, did you tell your doctor all of them or just one or two of your symptoms? I would recommend getting a second opinion with someone you can trust and feel comfortable talking to and this time, tell them everything. Good luck. Hope this helps.

If you're not happy with your new doctor, then try going to your local citizens advice centre, or even look in the phone directory for the number of someone who can advise you, a psychologist or something. If your friend has bi- polar depression, this differs from normal depression as they will suffer spates of ecstatic mania, and states of deep depression, so you get extreme highs and extreme lows. You will not be like this if you suffer from just depression, a low state. Also depression can come out in many forms, tiredness, anxiousness, sadness, not eating, not sleeping, anger, feeling like you don't want to go out, etc. but you don't have to feel all of these things. The other thing is that I feel personally doctors are far to quick to diagnose depression and prescribe prozac (fluoxetine) and a 'quick fix' to lifes problems. You didn't describe your symptoms, but did your doctor take any blood tests or anything? If you are feeling low and tired you could have a hormone deficiency, or just simply be lacking a vitamin or iron. Firstly, make sure you eat right and PLEASE go to a doctor, change doctor if you like, you're perfectly allowed to, maybe a stranger will be able to diagnose you more objectively. They are not allowed to discuss your problems with anyone else, maybe you could see your nurse or someone, also most local councils run a free counselling service so see about that also. As much as you care about your friend, try not to get caught up in their problems as this will confuse you more about yourself. Good luck and take care! XXX

It is very important to have a doctor you can trust. Please do not compare yourself to your buddy. There are big differences between the two. The doctor should run numerous tests on you to determine what exactly you have. Did they give you lots of tests? My friend told me how she went to a doctor for a routine check up and the dumb doctor just slapped the label of depression on her because she was having a bad day. I am not saying your doctor did this however some docs are quick to judge and do not run the appropriate tests. Anyway I would try out other doctors if you can not wait, you may find one you like afterall. More heads are better than one. A Psychiatrist who specializes in this is better than a regular doctor in this case.

K, i dunno if it works like this where you are, but doctors/GPs here (general practioners) don't reaaally have the full idea of mental health, though they're happy to diagnose you anything you like.

I'm not saying don't trust your doctor, because he can give you valuable medical advice - but if you're not on the same wavelength when it comes to your brain problems then things won't work out. If you can question your own diagnosis then don't simply replace it with another one, work on making things better in the way you want to. It's good you realise that trust is important.

Don't compare yourself with your friend. If you had even the slightest symptom of being a manic depressive (bi polar) your GP would have known and believe me 'slightly depressed' does not cover it!

Ok first of all you need to calm yourself down!...and dont start to panic since your doc told you your slightly depressed!
Everyone panic's the first time! (including me)
What you need to do now is just relax gather all your thoughts and consult another doctor tomorrow.
If he/she says you need some therapy...Believe in them its for your own good.
Remember its more easier to cure such problems in the begining so dont wait.

All the best and good luck.
