You should not under any circumstances try and diagnose yourself, there are so many types of mental illness and the lines are so blurry that the specialists take time to decide on a diagnosis. This is when someone is submitted for observation. It sounds like you have only been diagnosed by your GP. Mild depression is still very upsetting and you can have mood-swings with this, but Bi Polar is a very serious and incurable, yet treatable illness. In American Psychiatry they often diagnose children and teens with bi polar disorder but it can be misdiagnosed as teens and children are in constant change and are volatile. I recommend that you revisit a GP and if you are seriously worried explain your fears and ask to be referred to a Psychiatrist. GP's are only generally trained in all areas so can only preliminarily diagnose anything. Good luck, depression however serious is nasty and i hope that you are found the right diagnosis and treatment.

If you think you have been wrongly diagnosed(bearing in mind that you are obviously unwell and maybe a little confused right now) there is absolutely nothing to stop you from going back to the Docs and or getting a second opinion.. The first lesson with any mental illness is learning to trust, especially those that are responsible for your care, I hope this rings true with you and you find an understanding doctor

Being diagnosed as Bi-polar basically means the same as being depressed, though often Bi polar sufferers will suffer from periods of mania as well as depression.
Personally, I would consider yourself the lucky one, as being diagnosed with Bi Polar condition means that this gets written on your permanent health records and that future employers can see it.
If you are depressed, consider talking to a counsellor, who will be trained to help you deal with your problems. Doctors generally are only good at either refering you to a councellor, or just prescribing pills.
Good luck!

does your mood go from manic depression to elated outburst of laughing and happiness. because thats what bipolar is. if you think you have been wrongly diagnosed then get a second opinion from any doctor, they are not there to judge you and dont intend to mis-diagnose you.either way you are still depressed no matter what terminology they use. and treatment is good these days.
Why do you want to be the same as your friend?

Try not to get depressed, everyone has bad things going on their life and unfortunately the doctors are too bloody quick to say here take these pills and it will make everything better! Its not true, i know too many people on anti-depressants and they don't work! Obviously i don't know your circumstances or what is going on in your life that makes you feel depressed, but their are positives like one you mentioned in your question - you have a best friend?
Anyway good luck and all the best for the rest of your life, take care and be good to yourself xxx

you should try getting out in the fresh air and going for a good walk i know this sounds like crap advice but it helps sitting brooding makes you worse i don't know if the doctor gave you anything but they don't like to hand tablets out so much now and anti depressants only help the type of depression that's caused by being short of serotonin and those things..their job is to replace them. if your depressed from something that's happening out side of you head they wont do anything, have you thought about addatives theres a lot of controvosy going on at the moment and if your having sugar free and low call products they are documented as causing depression along with at least another 90 side effects good luck Keny

Stop having this need for a label and the confusion will go away. It will become soul searching and you will grow to be a stronger person.
Alternatively take the medication they say you need. And ask yourself why you have issues with trust (doctors wise).
Take care 'n' be lucky.

A second doctor's opinion might be helpful.
Why don't you do some research on this subject?
Get some sleep too. Sleep and good nutrition are very good before resolving complex issues.
Good luck, and dont' forget, you are someone very special. Do something nice for yourself today.

The mental health trip is a rotten one to be on.
Disadavantages: almost everything from not getting a job, not buying a house, associating with chaotics. Licenced drug addiction.
Advantages: wangle it right and you get invalidty benefit, and even a Council slum
The best thing to do is to find something interesting or time consuming to occupy yourself with: having babies is one hell of time consuming occupation.
