To launch a rocket, probably not. Too many variables for it to turn into a nuclear bomb.
Imagine what would have happened if the Challenger or the Columbia had had nuclear fuel on board or any of the other unforeseen accidents that have occurred in the history of space launches.

yes.But considering the ill effects it could cause on surroundings due to any mishap, it is avoided. But nuclear fuel can be used in the outer space to propel the rocket.
Nuclear fuel is used to propel the unmanned shuttle that is on the way to explore pluto and the cosmic objects after pluto.The shuttle will be pushed further by the gravitational force of jupiter and then on the nuclear power will be utilised due to the lack of sun light.the shuttle is expected to cross pluto by 2015.

from my front yard, no way. I don't think it can be done safely, in the earth's atmosphere. Nuclear power is used in vehicles once they are far enough away not to cause mayhem.
