I know the dogs lose their speed as they get older, but to be put down is very cruel.
Some dog tracks do try to help.

I also understand they do make very good pets.

I don't think anyone is surprised at the numbers of greyhounds killed. The greyhound rescue groups have been and still are making news all around the US and Canada as to the plight of greyhounds. I've got 3 rescued racers and people come up to me regularly when we're out walking who are quite knowledgeable about racing greyhounds. They seen the stories on the news and know how many thousands a year are now being rescued. People are also being made aware of what amazing companions these dogs are, so that's a positive!
Progress is being made - some states have not banned greyhound racing but as long as it's a money maker, there will be greyhound tracks.

I have owned greyhounds all my life. The fact is that they are not slaughtered. They are humanly uthinized. Only 30% of them are put down after they race.Due to illness or other problems.. The other 70% are given up for adoption. Greyhounds are the only dog that give blood so other breeds can live. So many vets have greyhounds on standby so if your dog needs blood..Im not sure to where you got your info but its totaly wrong.. Its Illegal to slaughter any dog!! And the greyhound "farms" that breed them know this and are watched very closely by the ASPCA.. Every Greyhound born are tatooed in the ears to keep track of them through there life.On and off the track. So that the ASPCA and goverment can account for them and to as why they are not racing and or put down....

Nothing suprises me anymore, especially when it involves money.
People will do just about anything to make a dollar nowadays no matter how cruel, vile and heartless it is.
And the racing dogs- well, after they have served their purpose, they are killed. Not in humane ways either. Shark bait, thrown into the ocean alive to drown (they aren't good swimmers), shot, starved, bludgeoned about the head, you name it.
It is a sick industry.
My parents had a retired racer- she was sweet, gentle and very obedient. Also very lucky to have escaped certain death.

Not everyone does this. My father for many years trained and breed greyhounds and they are great pets when they have finished their productive life.
Yes their are those who just see the dollar signs and that is the worst case seniro for these lovely animals.Unfortunately it does take all types of people to make up this world but it doesnt have to be negative we can make the efforts ourselves to change it to a better place....................Lets all give it a go......................
And try and stop this crulety that will in some event always take place.............................................

what else would you suggest that they do, the US just declared it illegal for horses to be slaughtered as food to sell overseas, because horses are an "American Icon". I suppose it is OK if they are ground up as cat food though. It is all pretty silly about how people are so caring about animals when they could not give a damn about the cruelties they practice against other people everyday

Your link is in the UK, and I do not know how things are there.
But here in the states, almost EVERY SINGLE GH is rehomed or retired for breeding. Of course the ARs are still ranting about euthanasia as if it is still that way today.
Suppose I am confusing the Arlites on here with the truth, they are generally not interested in that.

Because humans keep dogs as pets in the main. For the same reason, we are appalled that dogs are eaten in Korea.
Racehorses past their prime are invariably put out to stud and left in peace to eat grass, so killing greyhounds after they have outlived their usefulness is quite simply evil.

why do you assume that 'everyone' is surprised? I'm not. The fate of thousands of failed racing dogs is no secret. Anyone who goes to the dog racing for a night out is part of this vile scene.

Because all the owners want is money and have no regard for the poor animals. A grey hound is a beautiful dog and also a loving one and should have a good retirement as someone's loving pet!!!

because even though it is done, it is still a heartless and cruel thing to do. There are groups of people that will gladly adopt these animals when their owners do not find any more use for them. I wonder how these people would feel if WE could discard them when they got old and useless!
