What is a "flashback" like? Can you describe them?

When did you last use..?

A friend of mine last used in the early 70s. He describes flashbacks like living in a dream where you have already been before. He says they fade in time.
The persistence of vision lasts a bit longer though, but isn't as scary........he says.
