My daughter just turned one. For the past month or so, she was able to take about 3 steps on her own. Today, she took about 12. So when people ask if she's walking yet, what do I say? Is it when they walk more than crawl?

I don't think that the answer to this question is really easy, or at least it wasn't for me. I finally decided that my daughter was walking when she attempted to "walk" from one thing to another without trying to crawl to it. However, this attempt had to be at least partially successful... six or seven steps without falling. I had a hard time deciding at what age to list her as "walking" in her baby book. Therefore, I guess that my anwer to your question would be that you will have to decide what "walking" is to you. Also, if you don't want to mislead people, explain to them just what you explained to us... she is in the transition stage from crawling to walking.

I would consider her walking now. With just a few steps, she was walking but not in the sense that most of us think. Anything more than 4-6 steps is walking.

Even if she can just walk 3 steps, she already knows how to walk. The baby's muscles just haven't fully developed so they wont suddenly start walking everywhere as soon as they learn to walk. Imagine a patient bedridden for weeks. They all have to go through physiotherapy.

It's the time when the baby let go of one couch and walk to the other.

My ped told me that walking is when the child can stand up independently and walk across the room.
