Amplifier should work. Many have a 110/220 switch on the back. Likewise for an electric shaver. Strange, the wife's hair dryer wouldn't work, even with the switch. You need a plug adapter or the convertor box. Television will absolutely not work unless it is a modern flatscreen with a digital board. Computers will work with a power patch cord change that has the proper plug. The monitor for a desktop computer needs to be modern flatscreen.

Yes you can, you just need the device for that. You also need to pay attention to the difference of frequency. In US is 60 Hz,, in UK is 50 Hz.
Some equipments have that already built in. For example, i bought a laptop in US and i am using it in Europe., but it says on the cover: voltage input 110 - 220 V

Sorry, a transformer could artwork if the circuit would desire to draw adequate amps, yet once you double the volts on the secondary area you will draw double the amps on the often happening area and trip the circuit. An electrician can look at components of your 120v circuit and if it grew to become into under pressure as a committed outlet with #10 AWG cord then it would desire to be rewired for 240v dryer, yet you will have subject concerns with your landlord if want to try this. this is the subject, it fairly is extremely like putting a small nozzle on the tip of a water hose, the water comes out speedier, yet you don't get greater water. Transformers are a "capacity in = capacity out" gadget, it alterations the cost of the electrons, yet not the entire style of electrons (measured in watts), it would not produce from now on watts. you want greater warmth, you want greater watts. Watts are calculated via multiplying volts cases amps. So in case you attached a dryer to a transformer cord to supply 240v on the load area and 120v on the often happening, and the dryer tries to suck 5600W on the 240v area, then it is going to wish 5600W on the often happening area. To calculate the amps on the often happening area divide 5600w via 120volts, and you get 40 seven amps! you want fairly thick cord and a stronger breaker than your 120v outlet would be related to.
