I was raised Catholic. I have so strongly disagreed with the Catholic belief system and religion in general I am atheist.

The pope said something you disagreed with and or found offensive. When you desecrate Catholic churches and riot it makes you look less than peaceful.

I'm sorry but I don't find the Quran to be flawless or contain a perfection of philosophy. The Quran like the Bible contains a lot of cruelty and violence. They both contain some great standards to live by as well.

I have no favortism towards major religions ( okay maybe Toaism or Buddhism.) I would have to lean toward Christianity as being more of a religion of peace than Islam.

I destest a lot of Catholic church principals more than you can imagine. I'm not going to beat up a priest or desecrate a church.

Why as a rational person should I believe Islam is a religion of peace?

I have some very good some very Muslim & some very good Christian friends. We debate back and forth about my atheism. I love them dearly and would give anyone of them a kidney if they needed it. (not mine of course...I was joking. I give them my own kidney. Its my brain they don't want!)

Yes, it is the religion of peace. But you will not see the peace reflected in the actions of the terrorists. You will find the peace of Islam reflected in the lives and actions of those who are considered Sufis.

Does history show Islam as a religion of peace? No, it was spread by the sword and the fire. The Middle East and North Africa became Muslim after they were invaded with as much brutality and butchery as when the Romans originally invaded. Many Muslims will tell you the Koran says there is no compulsion in religion, which is true, but the Koran also says that the whole world must submit to Islam. Any nation that resists the call to become is subject to Islam is a legitimate target for jihad. Now, jihad is interpreted as a spiritual struggle by many moderate Muslims, but i suspect the majority of Muslims see jihad as an actual physical struggle. Therefore,as it is interpreted by most Muslims, violence is implicit within Islam.

Please do not judge the actions of a few on the billions of people who practice this religion. I have several friends who are Muslim and they are the kindest and most gentle people you can meet. Besides, Christians and Muslims worship the same god, its just they debate on who is the big profit.

PS Remember the crusades, Christians were not so nice.

I don't find Killing those who curse their parents, or cutting off women's hand who touches another man's genitalia while defending her husband very peacful! And I can tell you more a verse in the bible says something like: " I didn't come to spread peace, but the sword.."

I used to believe that it was a tiny minority of muslims that preached hate for the west. Then I started visting muslim forums, discussing terrorism with them, while a few came out saying suicide bombings etc were justified, most didn't see killing innocents as being justified. When I asked these moderate muslims about 911, most thought it was planned and carried out by the Jews. Most said that they wanted to live in an islamic state under shariah law.
They said us Kufr could live amongst them retaining our pagan religions. They said they believed that stoning people to death for adultery was a good thing. That women should stay in the home. If they did go out, they had to be accompanied by a man. They said a man should beat his wife if she disobeys him. They said that we kufr will burn in hell. The said they want to get rid of democracy and have us all live under the rule of god.

sadly, I've turned from being liberal in regards to muslims and islam to becoming an Islamophobe - fearing islam, scared of what they have in store for us as they preach the word of their hate filled qur'an.

If we live as dhimmis in an islamic state, we will be under constant threat of violence from muslims who see the kafr as worse than dogs.

These muslims also believe that an apocalyspe is coming by 2009 when Jesus returns with mahdi. They say that jesus will come with a sword and kill all christians and jews.

Islam is not a religion of peace. It is a religion that breeds zealots and war mongerers. Remember that the two main sects in islam, shiite and sunni have been killing each other for 1400 years. Now we are mixed up with them, will this madness ever stop?

Keep searching. I think Mustafa summed it up neatly, and the following post gave you some good reference quotes.

But all in all, you're best finding your answers by continuing study in your spiritual search. You seem like an intelligent person. If you ask God for wisdom, I think you will be rewarded.

Inshallah.

No-one in his right mind would believe that Islam is a religion of peace. It's a religion of hatred, killing and maiming. No-one is allowed to question it, either its followers or others. They want everyone to believe what they do or die. Where does peace come into that? They misquoted the Pope then went on a burning and vandalising spree; another of their specialities.

Almost all religions believe in peace and harmony.
Unfortunately though its how individuals INTERPRET the books and scripts of their religion and hate and extreme actions take place due to misinterpretations.
