That was just a thoughtless outbreak. We've all had them once or twice (maybe more?). He is using HIS upbringing into play, not yours. He is older and every step he takes may be painful due to arthritis or whatever; he is not really thinking well. I bet you the grandson will not easily forget this outburst.
Speak with the grandson and explain that people sometimes over-react as a result of person physical discomfort. That it is easy to second guess others and how they react (or should have reacted) and explain this.
Did the grand father act out of character? Or is this the way he is? Think like an adult for a minute. Arguing over something already done ain't gonna help the old fart, is it? Consider the sources (both, the grandson and grand father). Don't be too quick to judge yourself. Good luck and best wishes.

The only thing you don't say is how old the grandson is. If he is in his early teens and mom left him alone and he forgot his keys then I would be saying he should have been given the set so he could be in his home, are you a neighbor or family member and the boy is safe? Now if said grandson is twenty something then why can he not remember his keys? In this case Id make him wait.
Now the use of morran and idiot are not tough love,,they are mean hurtful words used in anger without thought to the person they are being said to and abusive. No matter what the age no one should be called these names, tough love when used correctly is to teach the person a lesson in life such as you did not follow rule number 7 you know that this has a consequense of...and follow thru. It is showing and teaching responsiblity. Leaving a child under the age of 18 locked out of his or her home to me borders child endangerment, child neglect and possible endangering the welfare of a minor in some states. Grandpa is old school and if he is too old to fetch a set of keys Mom needs to find someone else to be there for her son when she is away if he is on the forgetful side until he learns. I don't know why or how you think you need to say anything to anyone to make them happy a mistake was made again no age to go on here isn't helping me, but a grandfather who wont let his grandson into his own home is wrong and you should talk with the boys mother and like I said before maybe grandpa is too old to be the one looking after this person and mom needs to find another source,,grandpa was wrong for using those words and taking this action from this mothers eye..Good Luck

The word is "moron", it's used when something
stupid, or idiotic is done. Locking the keys in the
apartment after he had been warned about it
was upsetting to his Grandfather.
I hope the Grandson takes better care next time.

The grandfather should have not called his grandson any names. You need to say something about it. Like " I know you are upset and we will get the problem handle. I will have a talk with him" Something like that. Sit down with the child they will learn in a decent manner and will not feet like a bad person. We are never perfect accidents do happen.

Moron and idiot are abusive terms.grandpa has anger management issues. It is human to make a mistake like with the keys...he is young...eventhough he was warned...gramps is also not perfect..that is why pencils have erasers...plus he is grandson...so he is whatever grampa is...so gramps is calling himself moron and idiot. Moron has IQ below 50 and cannnot read/write/wears diapers

This is not "tuff love" or any time of love at all - well, perhaps a form of self-love.
The proper name for this behavior is "abuse."
