I never set my daughter's goals for her. (by the way my "child" is 20 years old). All that I wanted was for her to be happy. I steered her into constructive activities that helped feed her imagination and develop her intelligence. That was it. Her goals and whether she attains them are up to her. I can't set them and I can't get them for her.

I am of the opinion that when you are raising children, it's all a matter of luck. As a parent, you plant all the seeds. You know, morals, respect for oneself and for each other, values, manners, etc. etc. etc; you give them examples by doing the right thing; you talk to them until you are blue in the face, even though you THINK they are not listening and then you pray. You pray that even a LITTLE bit of what you have said or done sinks in and that they instill at least a part of that in their every day lives. You hope they become responsible adults who end up having beautiful marriages and then become parents of their own. But it all starts with you as a parent. Kids are usually a product of who or what we make them.

My little girl is 4 and is already playing guitar. I hope that she will continue to pursue the things that interest her and make smart responsible decision when she's an adult. No matter how much effort we make as parents to influence our kids into the paths we think are best for them. They will always do what they do and we as parents should be supportive and loving. At the same time we also need to be sure they understand the consequence of decisions they make. As long as my child knows that ill be happy.

My overall goal for my children is that they do what ever makes them happy. That they live there lives for them, and not to me or anyone else. They become what they dream of becoming and they live the kind of life they want to live. As for parents I want them to love there children unconditionaly as I have them and be there for their children as much as humanly possible. It doesn't matter how much money I have or they will have, love is the key and if they feel love from me, they can climb mountains, and I will be there every step of the way.

Both my children (girls) are autistic, so really I just want them to be as happy as possible.
From this perspective, I do sometimes wonder if this isn't a bad starting point for bringing up well balanced children, whether they have disabilities or not.

oh wow! what a question, i have 3 children i am 30 yrs old. my youngest is 7 months. then 5 and 6, i tell them to grow up and be better than me. i was a highschool drop out. i just graduated high school 3 yrs ago by going to night school so i could get a real diploma, but i did it for my kids not my self. that way i can tell them if i could do it so can you! just encourage them in all they do! i tell mine that they are better than me and smarter than i was. and they can do anything they put their minds to!

You can encourage them to try things but I found with my son that he became interested in computers at a very early age and now has a fine job with a computer company.

that is alot of parents prob. they are choosing their kids future when you should let them make those decisions on their own and stop telling them everything that they need to do for YOUR dreams. and let them feel their own dreams because you have your own to think about!
