The engines probably just getting old and it is a huge car for such a small engine to pull along. Super-unleaded could help a bit, or try simply getting it tuned properly, it may just be it needs a slightly stronger mix of fuel. For around £350 you can get a turbo fitted to those too which makes a huge difference.
ACTUALLY, if you just had an exhaust fitted and its a Carb not injection they had a twin carb system that may not be getting the exhaust gases it needs to activate. This means you only have one carb working whch is like having a low pressure turbo car without the turbo working.

decarbonize the valves and induction system with BG products.
check all air intake hoses for holes/and oil damage will colapase the hoses also under accel.
dont worry about performance products like bigger wires/pulgs ETC.
just use the wr7dc bosch plugs.
make sure your breather system is clear too

What engine type is it ?If it has an air flow meter ,That is the symptom that an faulty air flow meter gives.There is also an diagnostic reader on this car and very easily checked.
