There are many different kinds because there are many different regions where dogs were bred to do many different things.
Some dogs needed winter coats and strong muscles to pull carts, other dogs were bred to be companions. Herding dogs are different than Sight hounds because they have different jobs.

There are many breeds of dogs because of two possible reasons. The process of evolution caused the dogs to take on different appearances and features to survive in their respective environments. Notice how dogs found in places with tropical climate have short coats of fur whereas dogs found in colder regions have thicker, longer coats of fur?
An interesting fact that I discovered while watching a documentary is that dogs evolved from wolves and foxes after their relationship with humans changed over time. A study was carried out in Russia where wild red foxes were caught and domesticated. The researchers realised that the subsequent generations of domesticated foxes experienced changes in their appearance.
Another reason why dogs start branching off into newer and more breeds is because of cross breeding. Jack Russell terriers and American Cocker Spaniels are examples of cross breeds.
I personally like any breed of dogs. There isn't one superior nor inferior breed of dogs.

dogs were bred for different type of jobs or for the breeders preference. So if a mutation caused spots, they bred that. If they liked the dogs intelligence, they bred that. So from one type of dog sprung many different breeds. OR in the wild, the variety happened naturally.

If all dogs were the same life would be very boring!
My ultimate pooch would be a St Bernard - the only dog in the world which outweighs me!

Each dog is bred for a different category- foe looks, love and care, for play, labor, hunting or digging, retrieving or just for fun! I like golden retrievers- they are very adorable and can be both serious and playfull. They are very smart and responsible dogs, and are bred for love, care and sometimes labor. I also like german shepherds, and chihahuahuas.
