Holmes was a great fighter but because he fought in Ali's shadow, i don't think he was really given the proper credit for his career. Where would he rank in your top ten?

Holmes was no doubt very underated and underappreciated and some of it was because of his attitude and outspokeness. He was a fantastic fighter and deserves recognition. My top 10 are:

1. Rocky Marciano
2. Joe Louis
3, Muhammad Ali
4. Jack Dempsey
5. Gene Tunney
6. Jack Johnson
7. George Foreman
8. Joe Frazier
9. Ezzard Charles
10. Larry Holmes

Pancho ~
Larry Holmes wouldn't make my Top Twenty list, his mouth was enough to disgust anyone, other than having a decent jab that was it. Proper Credit is given when credit is due and he deserves none. Tyson Destroyed him. Spinks made him look like a amateur. His mouth, his mouth made him seem like a blubbering idiot and we all know what people think about idiots.
Pancho, this is my opinion, just like the ones above me are their opinions, that's what makes this forum great. If you don't agree with ones opinion about the question you asked than don't vote them as your best answer, there are some people (Not you) that just wait to answer questions to give the own messed up view on things, they feel inferior, so they must attack.
You ask very good questions Pancho and I, as I'm sure many others in this forum are greatful for. Thanks for the great thoughts.

I'm not sure where I would rank him. He was a great fighter, but he lost to a light heavyweight and the Ali he beat wasn't the Ali that beat Foreman. Like I said, he was a great fighter, but I'm not really sure where I would rank him in my top 10.

ali
louis
dempsey
marciano
LARRY HOLMES

holmes was a great champ with a tremendous jab but in their primes i think dempsey would have bobbed and weaved under his jab and landed his left hook and right hand to the heart .
marciano would just walk through the holmes jab even if it took 9 10 rounds to do and once marciano was inside it was all over. ali and louis are so far in front of everyone else that their rankings are untouchable.

He wouldn't be in it! I saw a poll of experts whose consensus was that Jim Jeffries was best of the Marquess of Queensberry heavyweight champs. Jack Johnson was second. Others on the list are John L. Sullivan, the first M of Q champ in 1882; Jack Dempsey; Rocky Marciano; Gene Tunney; Jim Corbett; Joe Louis and Jimmy Braddock. They rated Cassius Clay as tenth. His boasts about being "The Greatest" don't deceive the experts. He had some smooth moves, but the rough Slugger nearly always beats the smooth Boxer. I go along with experts and ignore naive opinions. People should do some research before answering such a question as this one. You said of all time, but people list only 20th Century boxers. How about Polydeuces, Amycus, Epeus, Milo and Polydamas of Greece? How about John Heenan and Tom Sayer who fought for the title in 1860? I can name many more in history.

i've said before i think holmes is a bit overrated. his rogues gallery is certainly not that of a top ten heavyweight and his best performances are against aging warhorses like norton and shavers - it's not even worth mentioning the win over ali who, bec of weight loss pills, ran outta steam sometime during the 1st round of their match, yet still managed to stay on his feet, despite receiving the biggest shellacking of his career! no doubt, he may have had the best jab of any heavyweight and it's a shame he never truly got tested, but how could anyone be great in the shadow of the greatest? he just, to me, is the hardest luck fighter of all, moreso than even tyson. at least tyson got his props, holmes never got his, despite his jab, his longevity, and his pedigree - training under ali himself. personally, my rankings are pretty tough, but i rank him as very good, a b-level, but not one of the greats

I see my main man, tough guy is still dreaming.

Ali
Lewis
Marciano
Holmes
Dempsey
Johnson
Foreman
Liston
Charles
Frazier
Holyfield
Lewis
Tunney
Tyson
Walcott

To the black (pink?) panther - Go to box-rec and look at the people that I have listed and so who each fighter fought (make sure you do that first) then come back and play with the big boys.

Opinions/statements have more validity when they are backed up by facts and objectivity.
