The pope refered to comments made by historical figures and other popes in the past , such comments had negative things to say about the prophet of islam and about the islamic faith. What if the pope refered to the hundereds of hostile remarks about the jews made by so many popes several centuries ago . Would that be anti semetic behaviour , or a an action of hatered and it would require a t least a smiliar fuzz as that made in response to the comments made by mel gibson? or would it all be a matter of freedom of speech?

Actually, Islam is a Semitic religion, so the remarks are anti-semitic -- though not in the sense with which you traditionally think of the word, in that I don't think their mass extinction is preached of ... If it is, then I'm once again sad to be part of this civilization.

People always have the freedom to say whatever they want. It doesn't make what they're saying okay to say or think, it just means that they can.

It could be. I seriously doubt Jewish people or Christians would riot or have such violent behavior.

Mel Gibson and Samson had a lot in common. They both could do a lot of damage with the jawbone of an ***.

There is a lot of violence in the history of MOST major religions. I'm atheist but I got to go to bat for Christians. They would disrespect the pope if he said something to offend them. They would never desecrate churches.

it's just like saying "so-and-so said you're a lying fink!" and then not clarifying or saying the reason why you quoted that person. Then you defend yourself saying "I didnt say it, so-and-so did!"
sounds like a plan to set up violence, then increase the boogey-man effect on the masses.
If it were against the Jewish people it would be a no-brainer of profuse apologies/disclaimers, in the US press- Israeli press often crticizes their leaders/policies(al-hareetz) in ways you can never do here. Their freedom of press is much better, at least for the Jewish people themselves.

What make you think the statements he made were not somewhat anti Semitic?

Most (not all) of Islam is a Semitic, sons of Shem!

and Islam and Judah are half brothers!

Yes. And it would be funny too, watching the ADL and Jewish people get all worked up into a self-important lather. Let's get to work on encouraging the Pope to do this.

Freedom of Speech has never been extended to Christianity. And what little seems to be out there is being stripped away.

May God help you if you're Christian and also express an opinion.

The speach was taken out of context. The reaction we are seeing only serves to prove that the statement is true!
I doubt that our Jewish friends would react with violence.
Freedom of speach should have something to do with it as well.
Also, do Christians react with violence when called Infedels?(sp?)
I think not!!
