say?
Hi, How are you. If I did not hear the name .. ask again. And then I try to get to meet them. Hopefully they will explain sometime.

Very little actually. I live in London which is a very multicultural city, and so I very frequently meet people with names I haven't come across before, and people generally haven't come across my name before either.

It's just part of the diversity of the world. And it's much nicer that way. I find it strange that so English speaking Christians constantly choose such indistinctive names actually. I know I'd rather have a 'unique' name than be called Dave or John.

I think nothing of it, as there are plenty of people with unique names.

However, I get p-ssed when people ask what my first name. I use a nickname that comes from my very common name, and people would ask me what my first name is. I don't want people knowing what my first name is, as people would rather call me by my first name, but to me, that's disrespect, because it's up to me how I get addressed as long as it's not a formal situation. Then, for my 29th b-day last year, I told the bar owner I wanted seats reserved, and he asked for my first name. He calls everyone else by their nickname (out of those who don't use their first name), yet once he found out my first name, not only he called me that, but would introduce to others with my first name, like he has a thing against my nickname. But he does not have to address me by my first name, like he doesn't address many others by their first name, not even a patron nicknamed "Beef". That's b--s--!
Despite having a very common first name, my nickname is not commonly used. But my nickname is a variation to one of my short names.

That's a great conversation starter!
I'd surely ask what the meaning/ origins are.
But if it sounded really funny like my names is Clickclick Oot I may just laugh and hope the person laughs along too.

maybe your name is weired to them, because in their native language it has a different meaning.

just go with it and enjoy the fact that we DON'T live in a boring world where everything is the same and life isn't a mystery (if we did it'd be too much like Maccars).

Ask why was that name chosen for them

I say "oooh, that's unusual. Where does that name originate from". Then they answer, and I say "hmm, how very interesting". Then we never speak of it again.
