You just ask Him ... you pray about it, see if it lines up with what God has told us in the Bible and run it by other believers who you trust.

A lot of people here have been giving you some pretty silly answers that obviously aren't true. The truth is, unless you're really close to God, it's sometimes hard to know. But one thing you can ALWAYS be certain of, is that if the thing you are thinking that God is telling you to do doesn't match up with what He says in the Bible, it's not true at all. God never contradicts Himself. Other than that, you just need to pray about it

Generally after praying; asking, talking, and listening to God you should feel a calming presence within you. This is sign of a confirmation that the choice He wants you to make will not go against His Word or His will for your life.
Always.. always.. if you have confusion to any extent, this feeling is coming from the devil who likes to keep people in deception and confusion, away from the Truths of Life.
And of course always speak to someone you trust regarding
any important decisions and supposedly hearing the voice of God speaking to you. Because the devil likes to deceive and confuse people by using God's Holy Word and mixing it with lies.

Is he telling yo to move? Get out of an area that is bad for you? Divorce?
Alot of times, when we are desperate for guidance, we call upon God to get us through.
Many times, we are so caught up in our drama, we tend to want to see things a certain way, because that way, we will have reasoned ourselves into being right in the situation.
I would have to say go with what your conscience is telling you, and know that you will live with the decision.
Good luck.
God bless.
Many times we will never know if we have done what God wanted, or what was right, but I can assure you that we all know, usually instantly, when we have done some thing wrong.

I personally think that you will know when God is speaking to you. If you aren't sure just make sure whatever it's about is consistent with the Word and then you won't have any doubts. Also, my experience is that God will keep you thinking about it or remind you often of whatever He wants you to do until it gets done. Just a thought.

before, God speaks in an audible voice...
but now God speaks to us in our hearts...
sometimes He uses people to speak with you...
God speaks to us through His Word, the BIBLE...
I know you know how to discern what's right from wrong...

No one actually ever knows this, because it does not happen. There are many sorts of hallucinations, dreams, or mis-interpretations of fact which may give the impression that such a communication is occurring.

I would say its quite harmful, if you heard voices telling you to do things. That is verging on mental illness and needs to be checked out
