Stockholm Syndrome not only refers to kidnap victims anymore - although that is where it originated.
It also refers to -- lets say -- undercover cops who live with a criminal gang for so long that they start to identify with them - they start to feel a closeness and end up thinking - "oh, this drug dealer, child basher, woman beater is a nice person really - I don't want them locked up."
So it is where your mind changes from what you deemed as acceptable - a loathing for a person - to an acceptance and admiration almost for that person, where others may say you are totally wrong.
You may in the end "turn" to be like the person.

Read the following. Very interesting for you I should think?

The Stockholm syndrome is a psychological state in which the victims of a kidnapping, or persons detained against their free will – prisoners – develop a relationship with their captor(s). This solidarity can sometimes become a real complicity, with prisoners actually helping the captors to achieve their goals or to escape police.

it's where you are held by someone or a group of people for so long that you begin to associate your self with them and care for them like you you would a true friend.
Famous people who have suffered from stockholm syndrome would be Patty Hearst, an heiress who actually went out and robbed banks with the group who had kidnapped her and more recently Natascha Kampusch, the girl from Austria who was held in a cellar by Wolfgang Priklopil for more than 8 years. She showed signs of grief when he killed himself after she escaped.

oh.. suddenly your tormentor is now your best friend. Suddenly you took the side of your kidnapper or your abductor. Its a psychological and social dilemma. Because the victim wants to be protected during the abduction period. Its the only way to survive. Oh this can also be a collective effort. For example when terrorists or a band of bandits try to get the support of the community who are mostly unarmed and the only way to survive is to cooperate with their wishes. Like food, shelter... this happens in third world countries.

a condition where you start to have an attachment to your kidnapper. you may actually sympathise with them and fight for them, or you may even fall in love with your kidnapper. and the kidnapper himself feels attached to you as well. kinda tells you how twisted the human mind can be. i think it's a form of self-protection by the ones who are kidnapped.

It is when someone held against his/her will is taking the side of the kidnappers, feeling sympathy for them and developing a sort of attachment. it could be due to the length of time of imprisonment or to personal/social issues.
