This has happenned twice. The first time the hospital gave me a laxative so they could do an examination, the symtoms went away for months. Then I had violent food poisoning and the same thing happened. I was tested for bacteria in my gut but nothing was found. Any ideas?

well ofcourse, it could be something else. the first time you went to hospital, the doctors must have examined you just to exclude other causes of your symptoms.
regarding IBS (irritable bowel syndrome) you must be knowing that it is a funcional disorder rather than an organic one, related to psychological instability. the symptoms are abdominal cramps and alternating constipation, diarrhea under emotional stress e.g. exams.
so to rule out other causes, you should regularly visit a physician especially a gastroenterologist periodically after 6 months, until you get a final diagnosis.

usually the laxative they give you contains senna which is lethal to IBS. Perhaps you get the occasional blockage caused by constipation which gives you discomfort. IBS is not caused by constipation it's inflammation which is a product of an overworked immune system. Sounds as if your diagnosis of IBS is incorrect. An easy mistake to make by GP's these days. However your scan would have made sure that you did not have bowel cancer, which is good. Perhaps colonic irrigation now and again is something you would find beneficial.

PS Theyre are two different laxatives a patient is given before exploration, depends which exploration you had. In the UK there is two. The first is to look through a small camera, you are awake, the laxative is a senna baded laxative.

The second is a scan, the laxative is called picolax. Prior to this scan they inject into a vein in your hand.

If both of these examinations are negative then great.

There is helicobacterium which can cause ulcers or stomach problems, it can also have an affect on the intestines. There is a simple blood test for helico, ask you GP if he hasnt already tested for this. So many people dont have this test, there is a cure for those who are affected by helicobacterium.

Ah ha! You might be a walking experiment.
they've done studies lately where they have cured symptoms of IBS and Crohn's Disease by purposely putting small amounts of 'disease causing' bacteria into the G.I. tract. The theory is that people who have these types of autoimmune disorders have immune systems that will attack the body instead of 'legit' disease causing microorganisms. When true nasty bacteris get in the system, the immune system works properly for weeks, months, or years.
In the studies I read about, they gave the patients a small drink that had a certain type of bacteria in it (don't know what type) and they had amazing results. The patients either didn't get sick at all, or just slightly.
In your case, the nasty food poisoning bacteria gave your body a real enemy to fight for a long time (even after you feel better).

I have had IBS for at least 12 years now and 1 thing is for sure you don't have the symptoms all the time..you could be fine for weeks months even but then if flairs up again as for finding it gets better after certain problems some people who think they have IBS find that its thread worm and after a laxative the worm would be all but gone but then over time it comes back again...I can only say what i have been told by the doctors...I was tested for thread worm but it came back negative. I can only say you speak to the doctor!

Helicobactor pylori.(not sure of the spelling)
I'm in the same boat as you i was told i had IBS and lived with it for twenty years, then i read an article about helicobactor in the gut. I went for private treatment which was a cocktail of antibiotics.
It disappeared for a couple of years but is now back.
They like to blame it on stress in my opinion it is something else.
