Jesus sending his disciples (not when he sent them 2 by 2) but later, he told them to take a sword to protect themselves. (Luke 22:36)
God does not expect you to not defend yourself. "Live at peace with all, as much as possible." (No boom boxes--!!) but of course, if you are harrassed beyond the norm, take measures, call for help, the police, etc.
Also, servicemen may have to kill in the line of duty. God does not hold this kind of killing against the individual. That is not to say that it is easy for every serviceman to shoot. And, the service person should examine the orders to not kill unnecessarily. Certainly, she or he wants to basically know that his country is on a mission for doing good, not a tyrant's tyrade for power or position.
Hope this helps.

This is a difficult question since we know that we should not kill, and Jesus said to turn the other cheek.
But when both sides in a war like WW II claim to be led by God, obviously something is wrong. I understand why some people become pacifists. I didn't go to Vietnam myself because I was in college and had a high lottery number but I did go to the Peace Corps to serve my country.
Now, if Hitler were alive today and hell bent on conquering the US and all of the rest of the world ultimately, would it not be a good idea to fight back?
The Bible gives us powerful teachings but we have to look at a situation and decide what to do. However, the Old Testament is full of the wars that the Jews had to fight. David was a warrior before becoming a great king. (He also wrote many or most of the Psalms.)

Create love in yourself, and then see the progress.'' Really speaking, love can conquer all and love alone can do this. Everything else, every other force or power, creates a reaction which is not favourable. If you are annoyed you transmit anger, and the other person becomes angry in turn. If you use physical force, that too creates resistance followed by a reaction on its own plane. It is the same with everything else. But if you create love in your heart, then the reaction is also of love and love alone - and see, your job is done! So create love.

Jesus did not think like that. Either you are playing around or you are trying to twist things around so you have an excuse to kill someone. Either way, you should stop it. It is a waste of your time and ours. As far as the other books in the New Testament, they are all written by followers of Christ. So, they would all have been pacifists too.

I didnt know people are killing in the name of Christ.
Luke22:38~....."the disciples said lord here are 2 swords!"Jesus replied "enough of that!"
Luke22:49-51~When Jesus' disciples saw what was about to happen they asked "lord should we attack them with a sword?'One of the disciples even struck at the high priests servant with his sword and cut off the servants right ear."enough of that" Jesus saaid. Then jesus touched the servants ear and healed it.
Matthew:50--52,,,,the men grabbed Jesus and arrested him, One of Jesus' followers pulled out a sword>he struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear. But Jesus told him "put that sword away, anyone who lives by the sword will die by the sword"
Mark:47~Someone standing there pulled out a sword and struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his ear.
John:10,11~The servants name was Malchus and Peter cut off his ear.Jesus said "peter put your sword away , I must drink from the cup my Father has given me".(to follow up on ur remark on Luke 22:36)
preceding Luke 22:36. which you mention as wicked
Jesus knew he was to be arrested "like a criminal", and had asked them if they had ever had need of anything when he sent them out and they said "no" so he told them to do the things he knew they were on about. He knew their faith would be tested and was in effect impressing on them that they should continue to have faith in what he'd been teaching.
Yes I have thought how wonderful it would be that when confronted with a soldier of any faith that proclaims to be peaceful and loving if only they could lay down their"sword's and really prove their beliefs what a wonderful world this could be.
But he also said they(his followers )should obey those in authority...God bless the troops.(which are not all christians, I'd like to ad)

Wasn't that sort of the point that the pope was making, that Christianity doesn't contradict itself like that? We can approach with both faith AND reason?
I'm not saying that no Christians have ever killed on behalf of their religion (because I would be a liar) just that is not a teaching of Christianity.

people kill then they say it was in the name of Christ
no biblical verse unless you look at old testament, which was the old law so that we can see how the new law came into place, which is not to kill and to love

you cant murder someone in the name of Christ but there may be some sort of circumstance where you can kill a person in His name... that person would have to be extremely evil or something, though. as far as i understand, you can only kill someone out of self defense...and i dont think he would mind if someone was in an immense amount of pain and they were about to die for sure in like, a minute and so u put a bullet in their head just to spare them the pain.

in a sense jesus comitted suicide, he knew what day and where he was going to die, all he had to do was avoid the place and he would have lived, but he conciously mad the choice to die by the hands of his own people, even if it was for a noble cause it was still suicide.
