You need to see a doctor on this. Minor side effects can stop on their own as your body gets use to the medication and you are on a low dose, but with what you describe, you best see a doctor. If it gets any worse, call your doctor's emergency number or go to the emergency room. Take your medication with you.

Caution: Do not abruptly stop taking Topamax®. If the drug isn't withdrawn gradually, seizures may be caused, even in patients who do not normally experience seizures.

I am on topamax for migranes. It is the same dose you are on. When I first started taking it, I had the ringing in my ears also. I don't know why you can't sleep because that isn't one of the side effects. Maybe your body is just getting used to taking the medicine. If it continues to make you unable to sleep then I would see your doctor. I hope this helps.

The first week is PURE HELL. Don't stop the meds. Tough it out, it's well worth it. My doctor started me out on 200mg right from the start(big mistake). But after six weeks, ALL the side effects went away. Again, the longer you are on the drug, the easier it gets. I love this drug and have no problem sleeping. I take all 200 mg first thing in the morning. P.S. The spelling and thinking improves after several weeks. Although if you have a job where you have to think, you might get fired, lol. You might want to stop the drug, book a vacation and start taking it when your off.

I think you should call your dr.I have been on topamax for three years now . I have severe back pain and am md. I also have to take sleep meds. I'm not saying this is right for you especially since you just started taking it , the best thing to do is ask the dr if you can change the time you take your meds, and let him/her know all that has happened.Take the meds thought till you talk to him/her.it can cause problems.Sometimes I run out and it takes me a few days to get them and /I will have headaches and sleep alot.

i guess for most people it makes them tired which is why the docs tell you to take it at bedtime, but for me it was the opposite. i started out at 50 mg at bedtime (i take it for migraines) and was getting no sleep at all! so i called my doc and he said i could take it in the morning instead. that solved the problem! it does also change the way some things taste especially carbonated drinks and it leaves a metallic taste in your mouth. thats just a normal side effect. after nearly 2 yrs i just got my dose increased to 100 mg a day. so far so good! if you have any more questions feel free to email me.
